Following lots of reviews on Unilocal, and their great 50% off on food on Monday’s offer(which I have yet to try, grrrr!), I suggested this place to a friend when we were looking for a place to have brunch together. My friend booked the table in advance, which turned out to be unnecessary for this particular morning. I arrived early(my friend was late), and I was given the grand tour of the place by a lovely elderly(?) lady. No seriously, I was given the graaand-tour. She took me upstairs, showed me the balcony, the lift to give wheelchairs access to the patio area(onto which the sun scorches down, as I was told), the toilets, the seating area in the back with the big mural(a real, original painting!), the dumbwaiter(that’s apparently what you call that small freight elevator for the food) but I declined a tour of the kitchen because I didn’t know when my friend was finally going to arrive and I didn’t want to annoy the chef before I had placed and received my food order. It was also explained to me that the Vodka tree, what a lovely addition, by the way, was designed by Andy Scott(the sculptor of the Kelpies down in Falkirk). While sitting back down under the big mural and further real painting in the main bit of the bar, my tea was brought to me, with the tea bag still in the cup. I was a little disgruntled by this, as there was a napkin under the cup and if I was going to take the tea bag out of the cup and put it on the coaster, the napkin would get all wet and stuff, but oh well. To avoid getting my Amerittini biscuit wet, I ate it immediately. It was great. While I was waiting for my friend to arrive, Clare S. and Gordon M. walked through the door — what a happy surprise! Eventually, Julia turned up and it was great to have a catch-up. The waiter had to double check, because although Julia had previously reserved the table for us, apparently she didn’t indicate that it was for brunch. We still managed to have brunch though, crisis averted! I ordered the Eggs Benedict, but I asked for the hollandaise sauce on the side, as well as my bacon to be extra crispy, and a hash brown(which was going to be first ever hash brown). Julia went for the French toast with bacon. Thank goodness we had lots of gossip to catch up on, because our food took its time to arrive at our table. It also arrived without my hash brown, which however only realised when it was on the bill, but not in my belly. I adored my Eggs Benedict. The bacon was crispy and the toasted muffin was delicious, the eggs not too vinegary(always a risk you run when ordering poached eggs, apparently). I was happy to have asked for the sauce on the side, and I must admit, it was not what I would call«sauce». It was quite firm, and I had to spread it using my knife. Although it did seem to separate quite rapidly when on my eggs, it was decently tasty — not too lemony, but lemony enough that you knew they had used some lemon in it. My friend also had no complaints about her breakfast. Personally, I felt quite cheated when my hash brown didn’t make it to the table(once I was reminded of ordering it, anyways) as I still had some space for it. All in all, however, I very much enjoyed the meal. I would also really like to try their mains(maybe on a Monday when it’s 50% off main dishes, excluding the Lobster Mac), and students get 25% off their bill until Saturday at 6pm.

I’ve heard great things about The Hyde, so when Gordon M suggested it for brunch before we journeyed through to Edinburgh(for the tattoo convention — yay!) I was all for it. Walking in — and bumping into Sophie K(small Unilocal world!) — I was seriously impressed by the style of this place. It has a cool vibe about it without being pretentious, and I can easily see myself here at night sampling the music or quiz they hold here. Since it wasn’t too busy, we got seated and ordered pretty quickly. Eggs Benedict for me, with an extra hash brown. Poached eggs with sausage and hash brown for Gordon M. It took a while to arrive but I can forgive that. However I was really disappointed when it did come. I was greeted with a plate of anaemic bacon, overdone poached eggs and something had happened to my hollandaise. There was a pool of yellow water on my plate — either the sauce had split or the eggs hadn’t been drained. Either way, my muffin was soaked through, the hollandaise was non-existent and I ate my overdone egg mainly because I was just really hungry. Even more disappointingly, the waiter — although clearly eyeballing the fact that I left most of my brunch — never asked if everything was ok. Not before we got the bill, after — or when we had to go up to the bar to pay since he wasn’t coming near us. I’ll give The Hyde another chance, and will probably be back of an evening to try the mains and the entertainment. But with so many other brunch places with great food and service, I’ll not come back here for brunch.

Hyde is one of those places that isn’t very far from the beaten path, but it feels out of the way. It’s just off Dumbarton Road and just behind the Three Judges. It’s a lovely little building I didn’t expect much from, but it feels spacious and well decorated. It’s quirky without feeling forced. My first visit was with Brunch Club, and it inspired me to visit on my own to give it another chance. The first visit was nice, but I could tell they were overwhelmed by the number of people we had in at once and the service and food suffered. It was still good but I could tell it could be better when they’re not so stretched. On my second visit, it was toward the end of when I could get breakfast. I was seated quickly and ordered a drink almost right away. There was some confusion on who was taking my order but it was only a minor distraction and I was able to order what I wanted quickly. The vibe of the place was relaxed and I felt perfectly at home to read while I waited. It’s not the type of place where I’d try to work, but it worked well for a late solitary brunch without feeling crammed or rushed. It wasn’t long before eggs benedict arrived and it was beautiful. It was the same thing I had ordered in the larger group brunch, but it was so much better just by myself. The presentation was beautiful and included some fresh pea sprouts for a splash of green. It was warm, fresh tasting, and very worth the reasonable price of £4.95. My next plan is to try the lunch or dinner to see if it matches the high standards of the breakfast. I have a feeling it’ll meet the standards and look forward to it.

My first visit to Hyde was with a brunch club we have going here in Glasgow. I arrived a bit early and sat chatting with my friends Gordon and Debs(also Unilocalers) until everyone else arrived. Hyde, located off the beaten path, is quite bright and airy based on what it looks like from the outside. They have a resident DJ who plays music and a bar smack dab in the middle of the place. As it were, we took up most, if not all of the dining area as our brunch club has slowly grown over the past year. I’m not sure Hyde was expecting so many people at one time, but they accommodated us as best as they could. As everyone arrived, our drinks orders were taken and slowly but surely, our food orders were taken. The brunch menu is quite full with various options for meat eaters and non-meat eaters alike. We all noticed(and partook in) the option to add extras on to our plates. I think if there was one thing the Hyde staff wished wasn’t on the menu that morning– it was the add on option. I’m almost certain, aside from maybe one of us at the table I was sitting at(10 people) we all ordered a meal, and then added on extras to accommodate our huge appetites. After my huge chat about how I want pancakes at every breakfast and how they never seem to satisfy the American in me, I ordered the pancakes and bacon with maple syrup, with a side of hash brown, toast and an egg. Even though I wasn’t a fan of their pancakes(they resembled that of scotch pancakes– small, dry and dense) and the maple syrup seemed more like golden syrup, the rest of the meal was delicious. I only got two wee nibbles of toast off a baguette or something, which was a bit disappointing for a pound, but it was tasty none the less. The staff, we could tell, were flustered with the amount of people and even messed up a few orders, but we are a patient bunch of people, and made them aware that it was ok and we weren’t in any rush. When all was said and done, we all got our meals, and even the wee pup that came alone(Hyde is a dog friendly place) was given a few biscuits to munch on as well. Aside from brunch, they have a pretty delicious looking lunch/dinner menu as well and loads of fancy drink specials. I noticed on the menue that they have various deals happening through out the week like 50% all food(aside from a few items like lobster mac and cheese) on Mondays. My friends and I fully plan on partaking in that offer at some point! A definite must try!

Hyde is hidden a little bit right at the bottom of Byres Road on Partick Bridge Street, I really loved the interior — there are huge windows which let light flood into the restaurant, an absolutley beautiful copper bar which is stunning and on trend exposed brick walls. Seating wise there are lots of cosy looking large booths and big comfy seat. Oh and lets not forget the large vodka tree at the bar! The vibe on Saturday morning was chilled, relaxed and very west end. The staff were great and surprisingly well organised considering that 25 people were in at once for brunch. They were friendly and attentive. I have to admit that I did fall in love with them a little bit, because Leo(my puppy) was at his first brunch club and they brought him out some gravy bones to munch on so he wasn’t left out. Excellent service, I was pretty impressed… even if I did get my plate of food second from last. :-) The menu for me was prefect for brunching — full breakfasts, butties, pancakes and lots of egg options, but for my money at brunch it always has to be the french toast. Hyde are super cleaver though, they list out all the things you can add to your dish, think potato scone, hash brown, black pudding, mushrooms, beans, toast… those cheeky wee scamps testing my will power even further! Needless to say my will power and I are not BFF’s :-) In the end my order was extensive and complicated, naturally! I had French toast with bacon, maple syrup on the side, black pudding, potato scone and hash brown. I like to think of this epic order as the breakfast of champions! I had this accompanied with a delicious creamy hot chocolate and an apple juice. Like I said there was 25 of us so the food quite understandably was not fast and I am no way going to hold this against them. When my food arrived it was piping hot and looked amazing, my plate was heaving with carbs and tastiness. It was topped with a little greenery which at brunch seemed kind of odd and was immediately dispatched so I could dive in. The french toast was light and fluffy, the bacon was deliciously charred, the black pudding was soft and delicious, the hash brown and potato scone were just standard store-bought items but there were cooked well and tasted really good. The only down side was that the maple syrup wasn’t great… this didn’t bug me that much but worth mentioning as if I was just having the french toast with syrup I would be disappointed. However I didn’t and thought it was a really really great brekkie! As you can imagine I couldn’t take a picture of the receipt since it was giant but I worked out that my plate of food came to £7.25(including Mr G’s pancakes I paid £24 inc drinks and tip) which I was perfectly happy with and thought was excellent value for money. All in all a brilliant morning hanging out with the Glasgow Unilocal Crew over some delicious food, I will definitely visit again soon to try some more of there lovely looking menu.

My friend recently had twins and we are always looking for child friendly places that have room for a double buggy(you’d be surprised how difficult this is) I saw that some fellow Unilocalers had been last week and took a photo, in the photo I could see babies and plenty space for a double buggy. I booked a table via the website and asked for a table with room for the buggy, when we arrived we were shown to a comfy booth with plenty of room for us and the babies. I had liked their page on Facebook and this morning before going they had put an offer up for 10% off your bill of you showed the picture, so this was an extra bonus. I ordered the full breakfast without bread, the breakfast was perfect plenty of everything, I particularly liked the homemade baked beans much tastier than heinz. My friends ordered a burger and a wrap and we all enjoyed our meals. We were able to sit and relax without feeling that we had to move. We then decided on dessert, I had the apple, raspberry and white chocolate crumble. Just what you want when is cold outside. It was so lovely and sweet and you could really taste the different fruits. We all agreed that we will defo be going here again. We also found out that the place is child friendly until 9.30pm.

Came in here last weekend for the first Unilocal Brunch Club of 2015 — great fun with the fellow Unilocalers as usual! The Hyde has a look I really, really like — it has a contemporary design, with dark wood and leather everywhere. Not to mention the modern art, stainless steel vodka tree — and it only took me a total of 0.3 seconds to get over it’s corporate roots. Given the fact that we booked in advance(there were 24 of us!), I expected The Hyde to be able to cope. Unfortunately it was a little shambolic — from the cups of coffee(some with teaspoons & shortbread, some without), to some undercooked eggs, to general cold food(i had the full breakfast which can only be described as lukewarm at best). The staff seemed really stressed out — but this might in part be because they were a member of staff down for the first hour. I think that if they dealt with us as 5 individual tables, rather than a group en masse, I would have had a much better brunch, and it would have made it an easier experience for the staff. I will definitely go back though — the only thing wrong with my food was the temperature. The Mr spotted the Mac and cheese menu and is wanting to try it out –Mondays have half price main courses.

How can you not like brunch? For me it makes me think of over indulging in comparison to a normal breakfast and to having a day off from work and the normal pattern of the eating that comes with #officelife. Brunch club is therefore an epic invention. On Saturday BC took us to The Hyde. We were 20 mins late but on this occasion that was a good thing as due to the sheer volume of brunchers they seemed in shock and disorganised. That meant when we arrived was perfect and we got to order pretty quickly. I am aware some others had some pretty average breakfasts, but the full Monty that I got was excellent. The only fault I could find was the egg could of been a bit runnier. The«Mexican» style homemade beans were spicy and tasty. The steak sausage was bloody delicious. Really in general everything on the plate was great. I could of done with more toast, but that is common for most cooked breakfasts that you get served. All in, despite a bit of panic in their eyes, the staff provided me with a great birthday breakfast. Add to this the fact they let dogs in and I am definitely a fan. One of the best cooked breakfasts I have had in a while. Rogue and I will be back. We may even let T join us to.

4.5 out of 5! I arrived early for the Unilocal brunch club with the intent of having a coffee and doing some work. They were still finishing setting up when I wandered in but the friendly welcome and prompt delivery of a good coffee had me optimistic. Once the 20+ Unilocalers turned up, don’t worry they’d been pre-warned, we got seated and we started ordering. One nice touch on the brunch menu was a clear list of additional extras available, meaning you can customise your meal exactly as you want it. I ordered the Hyde Grill — black pudding, lorne sausage, bacon, mushroom, beans, egg(poached) and toast, and I added a hash brown because… hash brown! There was a bit of a wait, due to both the number of simultaneous orders and the fact that, at our table at least, everyone fine-tuned their dish. However given they knew we were coming it did seem a little haphazard when the food started to come out(I was one of the first to order, one of the last to eat). That said, when the food did appear it was good! The bacon(I can’t recall the source but it is mentioned on the menu) was wonderful, as were the baked beans, a wonderful mix of beans in a thick, unctuous sauce(definitely not from a tin with H on it!), and everything was well cooked. Sadly the poached egg lacked a runny yolk… *sad face* The Hyde is a lovely space, looks wise it’s pretty upmarket, price wise it’s hitting the sweet spot for me(my fry-up was £7 + £1 for the hash brown). The staff were friendly, kept on top of things pretty well and were nice and relaxed whilst being very busy. The location is a little bit hidden away but I’ll definitely be back!

We’re always on the hunt for new places to brunch of a weekend and having tried quite a few now in our local vicinity(Partick/Byres Road) we thought we’d give Hyde Bar & Dining a go. Only been in once before for a(quick) cocktail with the lovely Elizabeth F one evening but we had been in Brewdog earlier in the evening drinking beer(well, I had, Elizabeth doesn’t do the beer!) so I was on a beer-tip(as opposed to a Ragga one, like SL2) that night & after our brief cocktail we headed onwards for more beer… so I couldn’t really get a feel for the place. I did like their big vodka tree though! Pretty cool. They have a pretty extensive menu here & I was delighted to see they served Breakfast/Brunch 9−12pm Mon-Fri and 9−3pm Sat-Sun. They serve everything from full cooked breakfast, french toast to bagels & eggs how you like them. We both plumped for the Eggs Benedict(my boyfriend since discovering EB has been craving them constantly!). It was pretty quiet when we walked in(we were the only customers!) and we were told it was because they had a function starting at 1pm so as long as we could eat up before then we’d be fine; nae bother. The gentlemen serving was very pleasant & friendly indeed. I asked for a Flat White & he said he could ‘try’ and make me one as he wasn’t very good so apologised in advance, haha! It was a nice coffee but I told him it wasn’t really a FW, more a foamy latte… I felt like a bit of a coffee snob telling him but he DID ask me and luckily he took my past barista-making tips on board and was very nice about it, phew! Our Eggs Bennie were very good indeed ~ 2 poached eggs with beautiful hollandaise sauce on top on some really tasty bacon(almost as good as Avenue G bacon) and(what swayed it for me) served on toasted bloomer rather than a muffin, which I *know* is the ‘proper’ EB way but personally I much prefer bread to a muffin, so I thoroughly enjoyed mine. It was quite a smallish portion but it was also only £4.95 which compared to other places we have had/seen EB on the menu is a really good price and actually by the time I had finished my coffee & walked home I realised it was actually just the right amount. Yum. We were both impressed. The toilets confused me at first as I thought they only had ONE ladies toilet(duh!) then I noticed it was in fact just individual loos… haha! Oops. Nice surroundings, tasty food & pleasant, helpful staff ~ brilliant. We shall definitely be back if not for brunch again then we’ll be in to try their lunch or evening menus too.

I have to start this review by seriously tipping my hat to the staff of Hyde. When we arrived at Hyde it was clear something was very wrong. As it turned out a woman had lost her little boy; he’d snuck off and no-one could find him, leaving his poor mum understandably frantic. The staff(and all of us punters!) quickly leapt into action, looking on their cameras, searching cupboards and helping the family search the local area… Until they found the poor little mite had managed to lock himself in the gents and got stuck. Ooops! I definitely needed a drink after that emotional rollercoaster, so we settled next to the bath of faux Krug and Grey Goose bottle and we ordered up some wine and food. My tip for Hyde: Order a mix of starters, sharing platters and sides, tapas style if you like. I found it made everything feel very relaxed for a Sunday afternoon, and the starters, sides etc. seem to be very well thought-out :) we opted for the chorizo, black pudding and spinach side, some of Hyde’s amazing chunky fries, some bread and dips and the meats and cheeses sharing platter. Having had the platter before, it’s clear that Hyde get the best deli ingredients on the day, as the platter has been totally different each time I’ve had it! The chunky chips, were light, fluffy and with a great crunch but the star of the show was the chorizo, BP and spinach side. Delicious and a great combination, I could have eaten a full size portion happily! Food over, we tried some cocktails for dessert. For the brave of heart and tongue of steel, I’d recommend trying a Hyde Bloody Mary — they come in varying degrees of spiciness, from a mild 1 up to an explosive 10! We tried the level 3 between us and even that was too strong for me. My favourite cocktail of the day was the Heavenlee, a Heverlee craft beer cocktail, a great refreshing end to our time in Hyde. Price-wise, I’d say Hyde is pretty reasonable given the obvious quality of the ingredients in both their foods and their drinks. The service was first class considering the fraught situation as we arrived so well done to Hyde! Now all they need is a sister bar in the city centre named Jekyll…

This classy new West End bar and restaurant has finally opened and I feel like the wait was worth it. Inside it is really well decorated — cream leather booths that are incredibly inviting and comfortable, as well as some interesting design touches(I particularly like the Belvedere vodka tree on the bar). There’s a lot of choice for lunch — either the full menu(sandwiches, burgers and standard mains) or there’s 5 x £5 options. I went for the mac(obviously) but I liked the sound of a couple of the other dishes, particular the hot bowls where you choose your protein(prawn, chicken or tofu & halloumi), your starch(noodles, bulgar wheat or rice) and then a sauce(coconut curry, teriyaki or tomato and mango). This is a little bit how I cook at home and there’s not many places that offer that level of mix n match, so I’ll definitely try that next time. Another menu point worth mentioning is that on the full menu there’s a section called«mac bar» — cue instant drooling. These are mini portions of mac & cheese either as a side or starter(or maybe two for a main?!). Lobsta mac got my attention with lobster, king prawns and spring onion. Sounds awesome! I’d ordered the mac from the £5 menu which is cheddar and gruyère. I won’t lie, I choose mac because I see that as a basic dish that can set a good precedent of what the rest of the food was like. And I was in a bit of a grump and mac always makes me feel better. It didn’t take long to arrive — say around 10 – 15 minutes which was a reasonable wait, and came with a portion of chips which I didn’t expect. While it was lacking a crispy top, the mac was perfectly balanced with cheese, sauce and mac. The mac wasn’t overcooked and the cheese was a really good blend even though it initially looked a bit plain. The chips were perfect … better than perfect even. Anyway, I loved the chips and I ended up dumping them into the mac and ascending to carb heaven. I had two drinks(orange & lemonade) so the bill came to around £9 for lunch. I was tempted by the £5 cocktails but it was a work day so I thought I’d be sensible and save that for another time. Special mention must go to the waiter who was really friendly and helpful, and helped me out with the wifi when I had problems connecting. Apart from some issues with the toilets which definitely needed attention(one didn’t seem to have a working light and the other was pretty untidy), this place seems like a real winner. I can’t wait to return to try some more of the food as well as get stuck into the £5 cocktails(M-F, 12−5pm).
