Popped in to get some respite from the snow today. Enjoyed a white mocha and a slice of cake. Good variety of seating styles from couches to proper tables. Lots of options on the menu it seemed and decent price on the breakfast options. Will definitely visit again in the summer for one of the smoothies too :)

Effectively Beanscene rebadged, this is a good-sized café with a decent selection of seating areas places to chill out. It’s got a section with comfy couches, and some good tables for groups and if you’re sitting on your own. There is a good selection of food, including 2 for £10 pizzas, and a decent selection of cakes. I’m not a coffee drinker, so I can’t comment on the drinks on offer, but there is a variety of soft drinks to choose from. In terms of atmosphere, it’s really friendly, with staff going over and above to help out the big group that we were in. You could definitely spend fair bit of time there and not get bored.

I was never a fan of Beanscene, to be honest. There was something about it that just didn’t do it for me, so when this Beanscene closed and re-opened as Norval, I wasn’t exactly rushing to go to check it out. I finally made it in for a proper visit on Saturday night for a friend’s bday, and actually the place was quite charming in a way I always felt that Beanscene lacked. I didn’t have any food but they have a good pizza deal at 2 for £10 and they looked like good pizzas so I’ll definitely try that next time. Other than that, they have your pretty standard café offerings by way of food & drink. As I said, we were in for a friend’s bday and the guy working went to the trouble of rearranging the couches so everyone could sit together in one big group which I thought was really nice of him. On a Saturday night I was surprised at just how busy they were — the place was nearly full, so it had a really good vibe to it. I’d definitely head back here now that I’ve given it a proper try, especially during the day as a coffee shop to get some work done in.

I’ve been meaning to update my review for a while as this place has been consistently good since we started going back. The range and quality of sandwiches is good, the pizzas and nachos are really nice, the staff are fantastic. They’ve done up their back garden and it’s now a lovely place to sit out when it’s sunny, with proper comfy seats and tables. Since we started going back, we’ve actually met some of the other ex-Beanscene regulars who also stopped going around the same time we did, but who are starting to go back now too. And it’s starting to feel more like part of the Shawlands community again — they occasionally have local musicians in, one time we were in there was a guy with a guitar, just singing a few songs in the corner, and it’s the regular meeting of a bunch of gamers who sit up the back and play board games. My only tiny gripes are that the quality of the coffee can vary depending on which barista is making it and I’d like to see a few more evening food options, but Norval has really started to hit its stride as a great value coffee shop which is becoming a central part of the Shawlands community once again.

I’ve a bit of a soft spot for this coffee shop and I’m pleased it’s finding its stride and confidence after a difficult last couple of years as beanscene. Well worth a visit/revisit if you’ve not been in a while. Good coffee and comfy sofas, great opening hours, a nice and reasonably priced menu for a light lunch or snack, with some tasty cakes and muffins. The back garden has been very revamped(and expanded) in recent months and is a lovely little sun trap, with nice comfy outdoor seats and sofas.
