The Lisbon is a surprisingly ornate building of carved wood and painted stucco ceiling that caters mostly to the half of the gay community who prefer the traditional pub, i.e.- the lesbian half. The grimy nightclub I’d pictured in my head when this place was spoken of turned out to be a dark wood-panelled room of exquisite design, both historic and unconventional. Also, when we visited there was an offer on cocktails that was so cheap I’m sure it worked out that they were giving us money. Now if someone could just explain how much of a coincedence it is that Lisbon sounds like lesbian I’d be sorted.

One of Liverpool’s premier gay bars and clubs, the Lisbon appeals to a diverse crowd and its busy nature speaks volumes about its popularity. But let’s face it, when we think Gay Quarter, we think neon, thumping music, bright colours and highly modern. We don’t necessarily think a massively traditional-looking pub with a gigantic ornate ceiling and dark wooden features with snugs in which to sit. That’s why everybody loves the Lisbon — it’s a little bit different. There’s a disco area so there’s plenty of room for a boogie, which people do like to do from fairly early on in the evening. Tasty pub grub is served during the day and the pool table gets used regularly at this time too, although they do tend to cover it when the place gets rammed. You don’t want fights breaking out over a good game of pool now, do you? Not that there’d be fights here. Everyone’s very happy and content, and I’d definitely recommend the warm welcome the Lisbon offers.

This mixed gay venue, with all its old charms is a great place to start off your night, with all your favorite branded drinks at brilliant prices! With the atmosphere of an old-fashioned gentlemen’s pub, — you’ll see by the décor darlings, its friendly and warm welcoming staff are always happy to serve with a smile, the foods not bad either. This pub runs different themed nights throughout the week, each with its own speciality from Karaōke to Disco, and if that wasn’t enough it has: Pool table, Electronic juke box, fruit machines, FREE condoms and Lube — stay safe now people! you’re sure to find something to tickle your fancy boys. oh and girls: P

One of the better pubs in Liverpool’s ‘gay’ quarter. The music in here is pretty camp, so not for everyone, but if you want a big, gay night out then this is an excellent place to start. Keep well away from the toilets mind, they are rank, and they stink. This is why I think the Lisbon is a little expensive for what it is — you should always judge a place by its loo!

You really do have to look at the ceiling. it can be a little disconcerting looking up and seeing people walking past. A great traditional gay bar, anything and anybody literally does go great atmosphere, good music and great staff

Traditional pub in Liverpool’s Gay Quarter. One of the ‘oldies’ on the gay scene. Great ceiling! Love the no-attitude dance floor too.
