I’m writing this review as I soak up the last few rays of summer sunshine in Cavendish Square. Glorious. If you work in the area, this is a great time for a lunchtime picnic in the summer. Even in the winter, it’s a good place to get away from your desk and take a lunchtime stroll. There are some nice art installations here, and if you bring your own paddle and balls you can try your luck on the ping-pong table. It’s a bit noisy from the traffic, and it can get super-packed in the summer, but what do you expect from a rare patch of grass right in the heart of London? Thumbs up from me.

Years ago, my now-husband(then boyfriend) worked near to Cavendish Square. To me, it is a lovely little oasis of calm tucked away behind the quivering masses along Oxford Street. It’s a beautiful spot to enjoy lunch picked up from the foot hall at John Lewis or one of the many little eateries along nearby Regent Street. For the last year or so, the park has also featured a really great art installation on the usually-empty centre plinth: a statue made of soap. From a distance, it seems a normal sort of militaryesque man on a horse, but once near the lovely smell of LUSH soap tingles your nose and your eyes can see the cracks that have formed as the rain and wind and snow and birds have slowly eroded the work. In certain parts the ligature is now visible as well, but overall it’s held up far better than I anticipated. The downside of Cavendish Square is that there are never enough benches after a rainfall when the little grassy lawns and mounds and muddy. But, that aside, I love this spot to relax and revive when out in the craziness of the Oxford Circus area.

Stop all that shopping NOW! You need a break. Take a deep breath. The sun is shining. Why are you on Oxford St? Where is your oasis? pssst. it’s behind you. Yes, just through John Lewis and you can get to a serene patch of green just a snip away from consumer chaos. Cavendish Square is a lawn-covered circle with big shady plain trees and Teletubbyland-style bumps. It covers an underground parking lot but you wouldn’t know it — all around looks prim and proper with no hint of multistory. It doesn’t get much use in the colder winter or rainy days, but in summer Cav Square is an al-fresco godsend, the antidote to the frenzied hell in H&M one block away.

Cavendish Square is a haven. I work all around the Oxford Street area and this place provides the best place to sit on some grass next to some trees nearby. Because it is behind all the big department stores it is never as busy as Oxford Street itself and is a real treat when you can go and have your lunch in the sun amid some greenery. I also like that it’s open to the public as many of the similar gardens nearby are private and I find that intensely annoying.

This square sits right behind John Lewis and Oxford Street making it perfect for a much needed rest after or during shopping. The square has beautiful plane trees and lots of grass and benches to sit on. There are none of the usual fountains or statues that you find in some of the other central London parks but it is still a lovely place to sit, eat lunch, read the paper or watch the world go by. I think it’s a great place to visit if you’re nearby with a few spare moments.
