I really enjoyed my evening at Shrimpy’s. All the staff are really superbly nice and sweet. My crab burger wasn’t exactly going to win some Noble prize for gourmet(a lot of hyperbole in previous reviews about it) but it was very nice. Little gripe about paying extra for fries on the side. Appreciate the rents are high in London for restaurants but if i go for a burger can you give me the potatoes that cost you 25p and then 2 minutes to fry for FREE please? I should write a blog of burger places in London that give you fries for free, like it should be. Pretty quirky, nice staff, over-priced(slightly) and no free fries!

This is a pop up restaurant that has been there for a while, but it is due to be closed before the end of year. The restaurant is tight by the cannel in King’s Cross area, and the building used to be a filling station. So the interior is quite make-shift in nature, especially the bathroom. However, you don’t come here for the décor, but for the soft-shell crab burger! It is the bomb! The soft-shell crab is juicy and the sauce enhances the flavor. I didn’t try anything else, because I was very satisfied and needed nothing else. I loved it and need to go back and order the double crab burger before they close down.

Wow, what an experience we had here– tuna tostada, the best squid I’ve ever had, beautifully cooked fries and unusual slaw. A real gem would love to come to back and see what else they come up with.

I had the best squid that i’ve tried anywhere. The skirt beef was exceptionally good. A little disappointed with the apple pie, but more than made up by great service and atmosphere. Do try this place, but remember to book!

I will be sad when this pop-up goes bye-bye. Interesting cocktails – mine was bright blue. We had great ceviche, my friend had a fabulous steak dish and I was in love with my softshell crab burger. Good service, nice décor and of course I love sitting at the bar.

If you are easily overwhelmed by drink choices then this place is for YOU because you have 3 and thats it. A cider, prosecco on tap and a beer. Boom. Easy. There was some sort of delicious food product being made. not sure what, think it was pizza but i was too involved in conversation to bother. Perfect for an afternoon in the sun(if there is any) and watching ducks go by(also if there are any available that day) and drink away.

5 star 5 star 5 star Oh my god, I love this place, it’s my favourite restaurant in London and it should be yours also. 1st visit was when I was down for the NFL game at Wembley, and my housemate ha read about it in some flight magazine, so we went straight from the train. It’s a 5 minute walk from Kings Cross, right behind the station. Their fare is seafood US style, but in classical English style — think crab shack meets the Ivy and it might make sense. They have an open kitchen, and I sit at the bar to watch the three guys huddled in the shoebox kitchen throwing together delightful dishes. It’s always busy, the 2nd time I went I booked in advance, and the place was full on a Friday lunch by the time we left. A nice wee wine list, but they only stock one kind of beer, first time it was Anchor Steam, a great North American beer, 2nd time it was a dark modelo, which was nice but didn’t match my dish! Now for the food, I have had the same thing both times, and I salivate thinking about it right now. Soft Shell Crab Burger with Skinny Fries, it’s in a sort of tempura batter, lightly fried with fresh avocado and pickles, the bun is a golden sourdough, and it’s just heaven when you bite into it. They serve a Chipotle Tobasco Sauce and its smoky and spicy, mix it with mayo and that is arguably the skinny fries’ best friend… I am not exaggerating, Fresh espresso to finish the deal, and I couldn’t be more content, it’s arguably the best possible welcome to London, and it sets the scene for what is always a gastronomical marathon weekend! You owe it to yourself to go here, I haven’t even mentioned the service, it’s great…

Shrimpy’s is just such a likable place. From its odd façade and minimal signage to the cartoon doodles on its peach pink walls. It’s like cutesy 70’s Miami in a strangely deserted part of London. It’s sightly pricey, considering the portion size but every dish we ordered was delicious. So no complaints there. What did bother me a little was that the menu isn’t particularly detailed, which is fine, but our waitress wasn’t exactly well-informed either. I wasn’t sure if ‘chocolate brownie and pistachio sundae’ meant pistachio ice cream and since I hate pistachio ice cream, figured it was best to ask. She said she thinks it might be vanilla and chocolate ice cream with pistachio nuts on top and made a joke about having eaten it before but still not remembering, which is all fine and well but she didn’t even bother to check with the kitchen! I ordered it anyway and it was what she said but it would’ve been nice if she had just asked someone. Really, this was only hiccup during our meal, so I am being a little nit-picky. Will definitely be coming back!

My daughter’s choice to meet up. Unusual setting, wasn’t sure I was at the right place at first! Welcome at the door very friendly and shown straight to the table, as usual rest of the family late! But no pressure from staff despite being busy and table booked out again later. Food with a South American twist, I had a very nice gin and tonic while waiting, a nice 45ml measure as well. Went for a smoked trout and fennel starter, delicious followed by pork pozole(stew) very tasty, I had a side of red cabbage chicory slaw and fries all good. Nice wine selection, nice atmosphere, will visit again

Shirmpiy’s is a Latina American inspired restaurant housed in the converted Kings Cross Filling Station which also holds a bar and pizzeria. The restaurant is very small, but the space has been used well, with quirky drawings on the wall and a smart interior. The service was less than great. To begin with the waiter, although friendly, knew very little about some of the food being served and where it was from. The mayonnaise I ordered for my burger never arrived and our mains arrived about 5 minutes after our starters had arrived. But worst of all, we were reminded that we had an allotted time slot and had to hurry up while we were ordering. I must note that at this point there were only about four other tables occupied and this was at 7:45 on a Tuesday. Shrimpy’s does redeem itself with its food. Everything I tried tasted great and it was good seeing certain Latin American dishes done in a different way. The soft shell crab burger(£16) was delicious and the chicharrón was fantastic; I’ve had it before but never like this. It’s not cheap and the service wasn’t up to scratch during our visit but go for the food and to check out the cool converted space.

It’s still hard to believe that this used to be a BP petrol station(one that I used from time to time) on what used to be a very gritty road at the back of King’s Cross station. Now it looks like some sort of art pavilion with vertical panels curving around the frontage and a neon ‘Filling Station’ sign elevated above the roof canopy. The entrance is at the back. On one side the the KXFS bar and the other end is Shrimpys although you wouldn’t necessarily know since there is no name. It’s surprisingly small inside with only about 10 tables but you can sit at the bar, as we did, not having reserved. Cool interior with just enough retro kitcsch aesthetic such as the pineapple lamps and plaster cast cactus and lobster ornaments and some pleasing stenciled art on the wall but the rest is all white table cloths and restraint. My cocktail was really good and well made. Chips and dips arrived. A small bowl of tortilla chips and a few plantain chips with some fresh tomato salsa and a small bowl of flavourful guacamole. For mains we tried the monkfish with quinoa and octopus with potato plusa side dish of ‘Humita’ which was a sort of mashed corn with some chilli and very good at that. The food was pretty good but portions were on the small side. We definitely needed the side dish to make it more filling. Service was very good and prompt and a bit formal. Orders are taken on an I-pad which seems a little overkill for a simple menu and a kitchen which is only about 3 steps away . I like the whole concept of the pan– American food and theme but left feeling slightly disconcerted. On the one hand it’s informal American food that should be be generous in both taste and size and value but the fairly formal atmosphere, small portions and high prices were a bit of a disconnect. Maybe I got the wrong idea. It’s more a place to go to see and be seen and the food is just for some light entertainment on the side. It’s a great concept and great addition to transform the area but in my opinion, expensive for what it is but might be worth checking out… it seems to be pretty popular.

Absolutely wicked. Small, simple space on the canal but the food was stunning. Soft shell crab burger and the lobster. Well priced, not cheap bit worth it. also went back a second time and dishes were great. highlights were the pimento grilled cheese and octopus

I loved the idea of visiting Shrimpys… all those memories of popping into the filling station for cash and chewing gum on my way to The Cross/Canvas/Bagleys years ago… or visiting for that(all important) bottle of Ribena on the way out to help me get home! Anyway, it’s pretty cool inside and feels pretty spacious considering how small it is. I didn’t start well, hitting a stumbling block with the drinks menu — I was in the mood for a cocktail but nothing on the menu jumped out at me. I didn’t feel it was a good idea to start on tequila on a Sunday night and there wasn’t much else on offer but, in the end, the other half selected a bottle of Malbec which was perfect. So, it’s never a good idea for me to arrive at a restaurant hungry; for one it means that making a decision is much more difficult. Secondly, my conversation is hard to lift until there’s food in my hand! Luckily service the is great(or our waiter clocked the situation by the worried look on my other half’s face!) and a plate of nachos, plantain, guacamole and salsa arrived in seconds, saving the day. I had chosen Sweetcorn Chowder to start and, due to my(hunger) confusion, I very nearly changed my mind a few times — thank goodness I didn’t — this was corn at its best; buttery, creamy and smooth with a delicious sprinkle of salsa on top that cut through the soft flavours bringing a tasty tang to the mouth, complimenting the chowder perfectly. Serious THEBEST chowder I have ever had. My other half chose the Tuna tostada and, although he said it was good, I had a nibble and I wasn’t impressed with the flavours. Also, it was certainly not big enough to be labeled as anything more than an appetizer — not worth the time in my book. We had the much written about soft shell crab burger for mains, as well as a Scrapple(pork to you and I). I don’t have too much to say about the mains; Although a little odd in terms of texture, the soft shell crab burger was tasty enough and my pork dish was interesting and went really well with the Humita — the best side dish I’ve had in ages(I am a bit biased towards corn clearly!) this tasty bowl of deliciousness would look like porridge or grits to the untrained eye. It’s actually mashed corn, full of flavour and a delightful addition to the table. No desserts and a nice stroll home — perfect! All in all a good night out — I love the waiters/waitress too By the way, The outside(but covered) bar serves pizza slices and drinks which is good for anyone looking for an al fresco stop off on the way home from work. Nice view over the canal

A good example of how the area is changing. Funky surroundings(it’s set in an old petrol station which has been redesigned and sits right on the canal), interesting modern British menu and prices which are creeping up. I had the soft shell crab burger which I had heard A bit of buzz about. It was great. The lamb heart starter was also very good. I got a table at the bar, the rest of the place was fully booked and buzzing. I guess mostly full of guardian workers. At the bar you can watch them cooking and plating up the food in the kitchen which is always fun. They were doing a good job. All in all a very promising start for this place and I can imagine it will become a firm favourite with us ad wankers down the road. We were in and out within the hour and it provided a slightly more glamorous alternative to the Fellow, though the prices did reflect that. My crab burger was £16. It was worth it though.

A curious little pop up … Arriving at it is disconcerting as it feels like it must be shut covered as it is with plastic sheeting but after a brief adventure between the plastic hoarding and the canal reveals a portacabin with walls decorated in pseudo Americana murals(to be kind) and with recently hired linen and cutlery(one suspects from a company more used to hiring their goods out to weddings) … It is safe to say this is very temporary. Still it is all about the food and not the dubious venue or the location, right? Well the food is tasty wannabe fine dining versions of street food. Ceviche was easy eating and nicely presented but perhaps had had too many of the sharp edges of its street ancestors smoothed off. Deep fried soft shell crab burger tasty and feeling like it had moved into a nicer neighbourhood without selling out. Skirt steak was nicely cooked piece of meat(but not skirt) and the chimichurri sauce had also made the transition up from the street. Poached quince was a little savoury for a dessert but interesting none the less and whilst my companion spent an almost fruitless few moments trying to find the brownie in the brownie sundae it was all eaten with gusto. Cocktail making, service and cooking in general had that air of seeing a band which has talent but probably won’t make it … Some members have flair but want to cut too many corners, others may not have the talent but are prepared to do the work. The food is worth eating but a little pricey … How much do you like catching possible big acts in dive bars before they are famous and just before they get it right?
