As I live locally to Blackheath, this pub was a nice find when we visited last year for my flatmate’s birthday drinks one busy Saturday night. As the weather was beautiful(fast forward exactly a year and it’s the complete opposite and extremely dismal but nevermind!), lots of people was sat outside and there was a lively, buzzy atmosphere. The pub seemed to attract a variety of people — young, old, couples, groups, etc — and it seemed friendly. We sat upstairs on a large table as there were around 12 of us and we ordered some delicious pub grub too. I then visited about a month ago one Sunday afternoon with my friend who was visiting me from far flung parts — SW London! — and thought we should sample their Sunday roast as my flatmate had recommended this previously. We were not disappointed. I had the Roast Pork and my friend Roast Beef and both of us were extremely pleased as they were delicious and so filling, I didn’t have to eat for the rest of the day. The best part was it was only 8.95! Would definitely return and recommend.

Having just visited a GK pub( ), the best thing I can say about these Shepheard Neame beers was that they were not Greene King. My beer was drinkable, but disappointing. My Kentish bland and watery took a while as a new member of staff struggled with the ordering process(she was lovely though, so I can excuse that). Seeing as though I am mostly putting the boot in I should mention that this place is too modern for my pub tastes, unrecognisable from the 16th century inn it apparently was.

I’ve just come back from the Crown since the new makeover on a Sunday night with the piano player. What can I say. £2.20 for a diet coke. The crowd are a particular type. Fake tans and Ben sherman shirts with lots of cheap aftershave and well beered up. The height of sophistication. If this is your thing then get on down there. Personally for me it was hell on earth.

The Crown is a pub where the atmosphere seems very dependent on how busy it is and who is in it. In the summer, I’ve been there and found it busy and friendly; a quiet winter lunchtime it was warm and welcoming, but a recent visit on a Saturday afternoon was off-putting. A group of about eight men were obviously enjoying a good few pints, but their noise and bustle drove other patrons to other parts of the pub — including a rear area dominated by a large TV screen showing horse-racing(which clearly attracted punters who’d been visiting the bookmakers across the road). Not a particularly relaxing visit — especially as I was on crutches and had to hobble with my drink to a table(no offer of help from the barmaid). On the upside, it has lots of seats and tables out front so that you can sit outside when the weather’s warm and sunny.

I have a real soft spot for the Crown, it is certainly my pub of choice in Blackheath(though my friends don’t always agree with me!), it’s a bit dark inside but it is really cosy in winter and it is always warm inside. They have a wide selection of wines and real ales and you never have to wait long to be served. They have a little tucked away table in the window which I think is really sweet and romantic if you can get in there with a loved one — especially on a dark stormy night. I haven’t tried the food in the crown as it’s not really the sort of pub I want to sit and eat in, I think it is just a little bit too bustly for that for some reason and the ladies toilets are in sore need of a make over but despite all this The Crown is a really charming place for a drink.

the crown is a very nice pub, with which you can also sit outside. first impressions– on the outside it is very clean and tidy. on the inside it is very clean, with more of a traditional approach to the look– which i must admit, i prefer! drinks wise, they have a few on offer, which tend to vary– i quite like the bombardier. wihle i have not tried the food yet, i have it from good sources that it is of a very high standard. lets put it like this– i have never had a bad pint in there!

Thoroughly traditional interior here but no complaints about that. Another bar sporting a good range of hand-pulled & well kept ales. Made good use of a comfy seated window area to watch the various comings and goings.
