Nice place to go on a snowy, cold, depressing day! We managed to get a nice cosy spot right at the back in the corner. Didn’t get any food but when the chips went past our table I was very temped to order some! Smelt amazing!

sexy crowd, lots of beers to choose from. Make sure to take advantage of the happy hour prices and pub grub… really great fries here. :)

Really like this pub. Dark, seedy and with an open air section at the back.

I am a big fab of Blackheath, and there is nothing better on a weekend then to wander up through Greenwich Park, across the heath and into Blackheath Village. When you get to Blackheath and have had a good mooch around the shops make sure you get to one of the nicest pubs in the area, The Railway. Settled at the top of the hill and next to Blackheath train station, this pub dates back to Victorian and is super cosy in winter and bright and airy in summer. The friendly and efficient staff will serve you a great selection of beers and wines, cocktails too, and the Sunday Roast is to put it lightly huge and great value for money. Apparently there is also a roof terrace somewhere but I haven’t quite found it yet maybe next time. The décor is a cross between gastro pub and traditional but it is nicely done and works well. The pub seems to offer something for everyone and there seems to be all age ranges, locals and those from slightly further afield. It is very easy to while away the hours here, and if like me you do and then cant quite be bothered to walk back down the hill and through the park remember that handy train station and let the train take the strain!

Just about my favourite pub in what I think is quite a poor part of London for decent pubs. I resorted to a nice bottle of cider though as I had had enough low quality boring ales in the other local pubs! There is supposedly a lovely roof terrace upstairs. Didn’t see the sign until it was too late to be worth the bother.

Yes, I know, I did it. I went SOUTH of the river. Sure, it wasn’t as bad as that one time I drove into Compton in South Central Los Angeles, but I’ve always had the impression that the world just falls off south of the river. Regardless, came to this local for a friend’s birthday. I kind of wish my local was like this. Offering a wide selection of local ales, as well as other draft, this place is great. The food is pretty typical pub-grub and really tasty, especially the mini burgers. Mmmmmm. There is a lot of space in this bar, with a number of booths and a beer garden in the back. The Railway is such a great spot, that not even crossing the river would stop me from going to it again!

Visited The Railway after seeing it was similar to the Gypsy Moth in Greenwich. I like the décor in these bars but hadn’t been impressed with the food or the staff. The Railway though is an improvement — particularly in terms of the people. There was only one bloke on so service wasn’t exactly speedy but he was friendly enough. One of the wines I had was a bit poor but drinkable. Bit let down by the food but not as bad as Gypsy Moth. Had a fish finger sandwich so not expecting michelin starred — but I think the fish fingers were maybe one of the value brands. Good décor and good music though and would definitely return if in the area.

This is a contemporary style pub with a very clean, fresh modern décor and a very upmarket feel to it. It does get very busy at times and is sometimes hard to get a table, I’ve also noticed that sometimes it takes a while for the staff to clear away plates and cutlery that have been finished with. There is a good selection of food on the menu here, I suppose this could be what you would call a typical gastro pub. However, it is not cheap and neither are the drinks, but this is Blackheath and the pub does have a lovely ambience to it. It is the ideal venue for the young business type or city worker, dropping in here after they’ve got off the train from London. The toilets are large and clean, there are sometimes queues at the bar on busier evenings. Well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

This is a rather nice pub, it can be quite loud on a Friday or Saturday night but it is a lovely spot for a drink and lunch during the daytime and there are lots of seats and a nice variety of drinks. The drinks are quite pricey but it’s that sort of ‘gourmet’ pub and a there is a reasonable selection of wines to choose from. The food is delicious and freshly cooked and it is child friendly during the daytime, in fact it is so quiet in the daytime that I have managed a few lovely lunches in there whilst my baby slept in the pram. It is very spacious in there so even at its busiest you can normally find a space to sit down, the only downside is they have those ridiculously big tables where you are so far away from the people on the other side you can’t hear them speak during peak hours but that seems the standard for pubs these days!

This is a great pub to go to if you fancy a Friday or Saturday night out in the heart of Blackheath village and want somewhere that’s up beat and lively. Normally full of young people having a good time and not much trouble to speak of. Good bar but lacking in disabled facilities.

This is not a bad pub. It serves a good selection of wines and ales but is a little pricey(as is everywhere in Blackheath). It has a very nice atmosphere and the staff are friendly. It gets very busy at weekends and they have live music on a Sunday night. I was there last week and I wasn’t so keen on the live music, but I am fussy as I am a musician myself. The food is not bad, good quality English pub food and you get decent sized portions. Toilets are a little grubby I think, but overall this is a good pub in Blackheath.

Initially put off by a bad experience here a few years ago(the staff served us a meal, one of the plates was called chicken & chorizo — they hadn’t bothered to inform us that there was no chorizo before serving up a very dry flavourless piece of chicken, then had the nerve to try and turf us out mid meal claiming the table was previously reserved despite no sign being visible when we sat down)…of course I’m not one to hold a grudge(i’m doing some sort of knowing wink to the camera as I write this, it’s not a nervous twitch I promise) so I went back quite recently for a bit of early evening food and drink. Booze wise the place is well stocked with a good variety of beers and otherwise on offer. The décor is pub with a modern slant and there is a slight air of trend about the place. A nice, almost secret, roof terrace is available atop of the pub which can make quite a nice point for an evening chatter. Ultimately whilst there is still a slight mutton dressed as lamb feel about the whole place it should probably not be completely dismissed out of hand. The staff were much friendlier on this occasion and the food was reasonable with no major elements missing this time!

Attractively decorated(something I’m assured has only happened in the last few months) with a very well stocked bar, as mentioned by an earlier reviewer, my companion and I initially ventured in here as he thought it had at least one telly & we were after a look at the football results. All traces of this were though missing from the part of the pub we traversed(although at one point we got a blast of tv sound so there maybe is one further to the rear) so we only stayed for one drink. Definitely gave the impression of a good place to meet up with friends before making use of the nearby transport links to go further afield.

A new gastro pub-like menu, an extensive range of drinks, including three types of fruit lager on tap(my personal favourites), and live chill out music on a Sunday afternoon to help relax you for the week ahead. A covered smoking area on a roof terrace, well away from the main building provides happiness for the smoker and non-smoker. Only a few doors from Blackheath train station, there is also a taxi rank within fifty yards, and bus stops right on the doorstep. The food is well worth its above average price, and I’d recommend a sharer platter for its large portion and it being the epitome of nouveau nibbles.

This place has always struck me as a tad trad chocker with people you wouldn’t really want to meet, boring décor, not much to offer. But speeding past this Sunday, the place looked buzzy and the chalkboard outside tempted us with promises of jazz and roast dinner. Weak at the knees at the mention of beef and yorkshires, we decided to defect from our previous destination and give The Railway a go. I’m pleased we did; the atmosphere was really wonderful. Against an artful backdrop of retro wallpaper and vintage furniture, a saxophone/piano duo tinkled away in the corner, people played board games and read the papers and food was served with a smile. We ordered a trio of roast beef which proved tasty yet unpretentious and we drank a great Rioja. There were some downsides in the form of puddings which tasted more M&S than homespun and some staff who were a little too efficient in clearing away plates. We also had to put up with a few less than musical punters who thought they were on X factor sunday afternoon in the pub is not the place for 13 year olds warbling Annie tunes. But on the whole The Railway provided a superb Sunday experience which I will hasten to repeat.
