During University I lived about a 5 minute walk away from Mr Lynch and to be honest I didn’t really take advantage of it. I suppose that was for a few reasons, firstly it is quite expensive in comparison to other Newcastle bars and being a skint student I had to watch the pennies. Secondly it was always an older crowd in Lynches and my baby face stood out like a sore thumb. Well fast forward 6 years and I’ve fallen in love with Lynches! There’s a really relaxed vibe and a certain style to the place. The mix and match furniture and ornaments that litter the bar means there’s always something new to look at. On Saturday they had a live jazz band getting the crowd going. As mentioned drinks are a lot more expensive than other bars in Jesmond and it’s a £5 entry fee on a Saturday night. But keep in mind this entry fee also gives you access to Lynches sister bar ‘As You Like It’ a short trot across the street. If Lynches was a song it would be ‘Superstitious’ by Stevie Wonder. Laid back, cool but it’ll definitely get you dancing!

cool bar, good night out, really popular over the weekend, can get very busy but worth it.

Brilliant when quiet! The décor and music is fab, feels like I am in a time warp. I have never tried the food as I tend to go on a night time but the cocktails are mega! Well worth a visit.

I went to Mr Lynch for the first time today, for what I hoped would be good lunch food. It was abysmal. The nachos starter was the only highlight of the lunch, and the sole reason for this compliment is that, unlike what would follow, it arrived warm. For mains we had ordered the chicken burger and chips, and the Green Thai Curry. The chicken burger and chips arrived stone cold. The chips and chicken looked liked they had probably been cooked quite well, once upon a time, but not within the last 20 minutes. The Thai Green Curry arrived all in one bowl. The sauce and rice were mixed like an instant risotto from a bag, and the chicken had been cooked separately(dry), then diced and scattered over the top of the rice/sauce mess. Like flaky meat croutons. On face value, it looked like a school dinner. A school dinner that cost £6.95. All this amounted to a whopping £20. Way to make someone with very little money to start with, feel very depressed about their spending. Still looks like a nice place for drinks… but drinks only. As a side note, I’m not the usual person to complain online as I feel it lacks a little backbone. I would’ve complained in person, had anyone at all come to clear our plates… or even walk by.

Mr Lynch is a great bar for anyone with an eclectic taste. Form the décor to the music there’s a wide range of contradictory things going on but it seems to work really well. The only downside is finding it. The Thrifty Beatnik’s Tip. Walking from Northumbria University you’ll see the TA centre. Over the road, directly opposite there is a slightly car park looking entrance. Go through this and up the steps on the left. Then you’re there Video link:

Mr Lynch is one of my favourite places in Newcastle. I am not the only person to think that though as it is always buzzing and very popular all week round. Its location is slightly hidden– you need to know where it is to find it– it’s not the sort of place you’d just stroll past. Jump in a taxi and head to this superb unusual venue where every single item of furniture has been bought on ebay making everything different. Rather than clashing though, the owner has managed to get it right and the outcome is a comfy quirky arty look. They host comedy nights as well as live band nights and it’s the perfect place if you want to snuggle up on a sofa and sip a pint whilst catching up with a friend(or two, or three…). The music is never too loud making it easy to chat.

Good during the day– they do food and have a nice selection of drinks. In the evening though– I really don’t like it! Its pricey for the area and very pretencious. Small glasses and short straws– that sort of thing. The clientel dress up alot– the girls always look amayzing, so much smarter than other student pubs and bars in the area. Often you have to que to get in and they charge later on in the evening. It does have lovely décor though– very 60’s with lots of retro items, such as chairs, lamps etc.
