The Cape has a good location, and management knows that. They recently went through a series of portion size and price alterations(do I have to elaborate on what became smaller and what larger?) I do not eat there anymore, the price/quality ratio dropped to the basement level. Exact same food menu as in the Jericho Tavern and Royal Oak, with similar price/quality/portion size ratio, so find somewhere else to eat. Again, nice location.

Down to earth bar staff, an awesome open mic, and a decent cider, ale and wine selection. What more do you need? Located at the roundabout just after the High St bridge, this place is conveniently located on the edge of the wonderful music community OX4 has to offer. There’s an outdoor patio in the back with picnic tables, the interior has a cozy feel to it, and the regulars aren’t half bad either. In need of a new place to frequent? Check this place out!

Nice bar in among a sea of mediocrity the cape of good hope stands out as a good all rounder. Positive staff, and bar food looked good, they had some guest ales on, but nothing exciting. Good open space so should be a good vibe there if it picks up at night… It’s literally one of a few non green king pubs in the area…

Was good about a year ago, but a steady decline has set in since the rude teenage bar staff took over a few months ago. Food went from good to average, the beer is definitely kept more badly, but at least they have real ale. Service at the bar is very erratic, and you could wait for hours without acknowledgement. A male friend from Germany with two female friends approached the bar for a single drink one Friday evening, and he was told without preamble to take that fu**ing hat off. I highly recommend the nearby Angel and Greyhound.

Large and generally packed out. A wide ranging of seating and standing spaces and a beer garden. Also, the upstairs rooms are huge. Typical Oxford prices but a good atmosphere and meeting place for a night out. They also do quality food. The kind of place you can go and bump into half of Oxford(if you want to!).

Apparently this place used to be a bit of a dump but I was impressed with the smart décor and it feel quite upmarket. I’ve been warned that it can get full of football fans and rowdy students, so if that’s not your thing, maybe keep it for the university holidays and non-sporting nights. It specialises in European beers and has a good wine selection, although you certainly pay for what you get, at around £3.50 for some pints! They offer a roast on Sunday but this is fairly limited, so flexibility is key. Vegetarians can get veggie sausages, which are apparently pretty good, made of root vegetables and with a red wine jus. They actually do Yorkshire pudding properly here, in a big tray, rather than those little round ones which have taken over the world. Not so great if you get a middle bit though, I suppose. As for non-vegetarian, the choice is limited to beef or lamb. This comes with a combination of Yorkshire pudding, mash, parsnips, peas, broccoli and potatoes. They sometimes run out of mash and replace with peas or beans, but don’t always warn you. I have heard of other things running out too, but being told after ordering. Food costs under a tenner but is still quite expensive compared to the two for £6 type deals that so many nearby places do. Still, if you’re into your unusual beers or wines, it’s probably worth checking out.

The Cape of Good Hope is one of Oxford’s finest bars. With two stories finding a table is almost never a problem and the pub always has a good feel to it. Most bars in Oxford attract students but because of the prices this bar tends to attract the professional class. A good location to start a Cowley Road pub crawl!

This pub had a shaky start, emerging from the much beloved Pub Ox. But has gone from strength from strength. Fully utilising the space on offer, the pub has created a sophisticated dinning and drink atmosphere with out being snobby. Choose from a massive range of off the beaten track beers, and extensive wine list. The food, although a little on the pricey side for pub food, is fantastic. And with live jazz and exceedingly comfy seating, this is one of my favourite places in Oxford. REVIEWINONELINE: Jazzy, Chilled, Hip Cats
