Great food but very small portions. No desserts. Try the curried goat or oxtail. Very tasty.

Food great! Server incredibly rude. If you want to put up with rudeness than go but there are too many wonderful places in St. John for incredible dinners!

I couldn’t eat my food at all. We can choose 3 sides with one entrée and I filled my stomach with the side coleslaw and steamed vegetables. I ordered veggie delight since all the non vegetarian dishes are not boneless. My dish was too tangy, salty and high acidic flavor with no sauce or anything to balance that. French fries were drenched in oil and kinda soggy, soft. I would give a 1 star but my husband liked his lamb curry and The place was good, our waitress was very sweet.

This place was great! The food was simply delicious, lamb was melt-in-mouth tender and all of their sides were superb. Everyone on the island was recommending this place and for a good reason.

Great place… we happened across this place after the first place we planned to go was closed. We were 6 adults and 3 kids, they were very accommodating of us, and occasionally whiny kids. The food was awesome, we got a mix of roti, oxtail, creole chicken, and everything was good. The sides were great too. mac and cheese and sweet potato were the highlights. Prices were great too. total bill was $ 130 ish and each of the adults had our own entrée and a drink too. Will go back if I return to St john ever

Best restaurant I have ever been to. If you’re visiting St john, a visit here is a must. I had something with goat and my boyfriend had fish, both of which were amazing. Also, my side dishes were fantastic, order the plantains and mashed sweet potatoes. As if this restaurant couldn’t get any better, the staff were super friendly, thanks so much!

Indoor restaurant with meaningful air conditioning! The food here was also authentic island cuisine. I had oxtail stew and my friend had balalaika.(Spelled wrong sorry) Very good. Just too cold to stay long. The waitress Gloria from Brooklyn is a real doll! Lovely time and highly recommended

The staff was really nice. We went on New Years Day and a few of their staff was sick so the service was a bit slow. We ordered 2 conch fritters and they were pretty good! The dipping sauce for it is a little spicy but nothing you wouldn’t be able to handle. For dinner had each ordered roti(3 seafood and 1 chicken and chicken was the best one!) Overall we had a great dinner.

First taste of Caribbean cuisine on my trip to USVI. Sadly, the ferry schedule that we were tied to prevented us from lingering for a sit down dinner in this rather cute and homey restaurant situated in equally charming Cruz bay. I had the vegetarian roti — remarkably similar to the traditional indian roti stuffed with an assortment of ingredients that brought out the melting pot of cuisine influences that shape Carribean cooking. And of course, a side of plaintains! The flavors of cooking wafted through the waiting area, we carried the precious cargo on the ferry back and devoured the food when we hit solid ground :) — excellent food that really feels home-cooked, the portions are huge, so go hungry, leave happy!

Food: tasty, hot, good size of portion, comes with few different sides. Service: fast, and accommodating. Ambiance: its just a quite place to eat family tradition Carribian food, not to have any specific experience. View: No view

Okay. I was dying to go here. Read all the reviews. Got the oxtail stew. All fat, very disappointing. Hubs snapper was good as was daughters Mahi. I hate to say nothing special. The service was wonderful, however. I would not go back.

Good pricing, oxtail stew was very good & the Red Snapper was also. You receive three sides with your meal.

Really good food, quiet, intimate atmosphere and huge drinks. Money well spent and though they didn’t have calalou(?) we were very pleased by the authentic and well prepared Roti w/chicken. Moderately priced by VI standards this was a really nice and filling dinner.

With the 5 stars on Unilocal and recommendations from locals, we had to try De’ Coal Pot. We were NOT disappointed! We went for lunch which ended at 4pm. The ox tail stew was soooo good. My friends had fish. One was grilled the other was creole style. All the dinners come with three sides. I had the seasoned rice, plantains and steamed veggies. Everything was delicious and the amount of food was more than enough. Everything was so good, we went back a second time on our 8 day trip. This time we went for dinner which starts at 5pm. More oxtail, more goodness. One of my friends had the garlic herb conch and if I hadn’t had the oxtail, that’s what I would have had. That was amazing. I agree with others that the food took time, and it was well worth it. Have a pain killer while you wait and enjoy!

We stopped in after an all day boating excursion. We were in swim clothes and covered in salt water. We were also a bit early for dinner — so we did not experience the slow service. The owner/cook is actually from the islands and learned to cook on the coal pots. That’s why the service is slow — it’s authentic. Caribbean food is meant to be cooked low and slow and savored slowly as an experience. We got the chicken roti and the whole snapper. The portions were plentiful. My husband is a good ol’ Texas boy and he always cleans his plate but even he couldn’t conquer the chicken roti. We were thrilled with the entire experience. This is a don’t miss spot! Even if you have to pay $ 28 for the round trip ferry.

If you are looking for a quick meal, don’t bother. It’s not the point. The food may take a while but it’s home cooked and is AMAZING. I ordered the creole chicken with rice and Mac n cheese. It was to die for. My friends ordered the curried goat and a fish dish(sorry I can’t remember). Everyone loved it. Not too spicy but spiced enough to really do wonders to the pallet. We are all so full right now… Literally couldn’t stop eating all of the food. The waitress was super nice and was busy making our drinks, serving everyone and answering the phone. She was great! Don’t be deterred by «authentic Caribbean» — De Coal Pot is an absolute must if you have time. The food is some of the best, if not the best on the island. Where most restaurants on the island fall short is that they come up with really creative menus that they cannot get quality ingredients to execute. You get the opposite here. This menu has been perfected off what is easily accessible and therefore is some of the best food I’ve had on the island. I think the Chicken Roti would be hard to top — so long as you spend the extra $ 3 for a side of the Mac n Cheese, which alone is worth the trip. The Chicken Creole is also a favorite mainly because you get to choose three sides :) the rice and beans and potato salad are also fantastic. Do yourself a favor, have a meal or two and thank us later!

May be the best place on the island. Great food friendly staff and air conditioned. We wanted local flavor and this was the place. My family tried goat, whelk, ox tail and more. Ordered the fish soup because I had heard it was good and it lived up to expectations. A mix of locals and tourists let us know this place has a steady following.
