Aww, I didn’t believe it when my coworkers said this place was closed down. I bought a groupon a long time ago since my old work place was just a block away. We ordered two mushroom burger, a chocolate milkshake and yam fries. The best part was the yam fries since it was literally a giant basket of them. There was enough for me to pack up and bring back those burger aluminum back for my coworkers. The burger was okay, but I’m not sure about the price. It advertised as some percent of Kobe beef in it. The milkshake could have been thicker and larger though. Sad to see this place closed since it was just taken over not that long ago. #30DaysofYelp 10⁄30

We bought a groupon for this place a while back just to check it out and had a great experience and even better burgers! We saw another groupon come out so we had to buy one again! This time was equally amazing! The next time we went back without a groupon and it was yummy again. so 3 times here, all so good! I would definitely recommend this burger joint instead of the usual burger shops… the murales on the walls are so cool with an 80’s feel! Go here if you want a real good burger!

Came here for lunch based on a tip. Parking here would be pretty awful, so you may want to walk here, or bring lots of coins for 3 minutes of metered parking. The interior is retro 80s, and is quite well done. Reminds me of the glory days of MJ, Paula Abdul, and Back to the Future. And Top Gun. Okay it is a *bit* on the tacky side, but it’s also kinda neat. There is a nice patio outside as well. Service is decent for a burger joint. Drinks are self-serve. The food quality is very decent. The burger was nice and juicy, and the toppings were fresh. The yam fries were also easy on the oil, which is also great. The pricing here is a bit high though. Yes the regular burger is $ 5.50, but add fries and a drink and you’re looking at $ 13. It’s in the same league as Vera’s, Fatburger, and Five Guys. Slightly cheaper, but not by much. With that said, today there was a «Burger & Beer» special for $ 7.49. I heard there’s a deal here on Mondays, but do some research. Definitely worth checking out.

Came back here again with husband because he was enticed by the neon lights(so easily amused!). We checked their facebook page for hours, and it turns out that they post specials there every now and then. Sort of helpful, but would be better if they had a website that showed their full menu. Anyways, we noticed that Monday Madness usually had $ 3.50 burgers, so we thought, why not! We showed up late(but they’re open til 11, so no biggie), and bought a bunch of stuff because we’re hungry and have no shame. I ordered a burger combo with grilled mushrooms, and husband ordered the grilled cod burger and… a specialty burger that has an onion ring inside. Dammit, see — this is why they need to post menus. But that wouldn’t even help, the cod burger is a seasonal dish, and the onion ring one wasn’t on their regular menu, it was on a digital photo frame rotating with pictures. He got both his burgers with grilled onions and mushrooms. After ordering, I filled up my drink from the fountain machine(LOVE!) and waited for our food. The place was pretty empty, but the chef was a bit occupied so it took a while for our food to get to us. And then it arrived… husband got two onion ring burgers. Good thing we kept our receipt — he took it back to the counter and showed them that we were missing a cod burger, and the chef apologized and went to make us one right away. And took away the other one :( He came back a few minutes later with the burger, but without the onions and mushrooms. Man, he must’ve been scrambled or something! But we were patient, and the second the chef saw my man get up again, he came right over to ask if everything was okay. When we told him what was missing, he brought it out in an instant in little side containers. The fries there are so good though, that despite being full on the burger, I couldn’t stop eating them. It’s a fun spot to hang out if the music isn’t too loud, and aside from us they seemed pretty quick with their service. With two people working there, I’d say we were a one-off case, so I’d still go back, just for those fries. And endless pop.

The 80’s theme is charming, however, I think that they’re trying too hard to be In and Out Burger, sans the taste. There is a small burger competition, however, small, therefore, it’s not hard to carve yourself from the pack. Sunset Burger, although they have a very nicely seasoned patty(better than Vera’s or Fat Burger) fail to stand out. They’re fries are hand cut, however, I received them over fried. The burgers are reasonably priced in comparison to the others at least.

I went into Sunset with pretty high expectations after reading reviews and can’t say they completely lived up to them. I love the California 80’s vibe, it’s like hanging out in an episode of Saved By The Bell, which is cheesy as hell but it’s something different and fun! I got the veggie burger and poutine, while the poutine was pretty good the veggie patty was about the same quality and taste of the one they serve at Burger King so I was a little disappointed there. I did like that they had grilled cheese sandwiches and mac and cheese on the menu, would probably try those instead of the veggie burger if I go back.

The burger saga continues! We decided to give this place a try after seeing it a couple times. It’s pretty eye-catching from the outside with the crazy 80s/90s décor, so it was only a matter of time. Verdict? Generally satisfied, but better burgers and value can be found elsewhere. As I mentioned, it’s a really bold-looking joint from the outside. Once you get in there it’s a little less amazing than you think, but from a DIY/small business standpoint, still pretty impressive. Standard trendy music rules apply, and it was pleasantly low enough that we didn’t need to raise our voices to converse. Like many similar restaurants, you order at the counter and they bring your food to your table once it’s ready. The staff were very friendly and quite prompt. It wasn’t a busy night, but I appreciate that they didn’t dawdle at all and served us quite quickly. There was a slight mixup with the orders but it was a simple matter of mixing up who ordered what, easily figured out . The food itself was where they lost some points. It was fresh and from what I could tell the ingredients were good, but the patty in my cheeseburger tasted over-seasoned. If it was kobe, I couldn’t tell. The fries were pretty good, but for the price I expected a little more. The onion rings were standard. Tasty, but nothing special. Normally if it was a budget place this wouldn’t be too big a deal, but I felt I ended up paying a bit much for what I got. A standard sized burger with a couple extra toppings(everything but the basic veggies are extras, but some are free), a small side of fries and a tiny fountain pop came to over $ 12. Weirdly, they don’t seem to have an option for substituting drinks if you want a combo, my date ordered a milkshake thinking it would be substituted in, but she ended up with BOTH drinks. Not a big deal, just kind of weird. Said shake was again nothing special. But I gotta give some more praise, there is a pretty big variety of available toppings, which is always cool. Want a teriyaki burger with grilled pineapple? They can do it. Cali style with guacamole and cheese? Southwestern barbecue with fried onions and mushrooms? All of the above! So that’s pretty cool. They did have some pretty good prices for beer, so that’s another upside as well. I guess I was just mostly underwhelmed. I’d go back if I was craving a burger with specific toppings and didn’t want to spend more or travel farther. But otherwise you can get much better-tasting burgers or better value elsewhere.

The other night I had a hankering for a burger, fries, and strawberry shake and didn’t want to leave home. Good news… My wife was out with friends, slated to be home soon… so a quick SMS «…can you swing by sunset to pick me up a snack so I continue working…» reply«no worries mate» lol When she gets home with half my strawberry shake gone… she smiles and says«too sweet gabé» and hands me the bag. We shared the fries and the burger went back and forth. The fries were still hot and were nice and salty. The burger started out bland and became more salty and seasoned as we munched on. It tasted like it had not been mixed properly. Bummer. So the burger was not very good tonight and my wife was right about the shake — too sweet. hmmm I hate when I eat fast food, and don’t enjoy it. It’s a waste of the calories and unhealthyness. I feel gypped! today sunset gets only 2. g

Well now that sunset is on the scene I had to give it a try and see how it stack’s up against some of my other favs… I’m sure you can tell from my 4 star rating that it stack’s up pretty well. In all honesty, everything about this burger was solid. A nice toasty bun, all the fixin’s and a nice, thick juicy patty. The only issue I have is that they advertise the burger as 100% Kobe beef… really? A. I thought we don’t even get Kobe here, I thought it was all Wagyu… B. The meat tastes nothing like Kobe, so don’t bother advertising that… Then I come in with this huge expectation for an amazing piece of meat. Further, if it were 100% Kobe, there’s no way in hell they would serve the meat well done, they don’t even ask you how you want it prepared. My conclusion — the Kobe claim is false, but with all that aside, the burger is STILL head and shoulders above most in this city. Second only to a few, I will happily head back to sunset to fill my regular cravings for meat on bread.

I pass by this place all the time and when the living social had a deal for Sunset Burger, I bought a voucher for it. My hubby and I went tonight with our little man. It wasn’t too busy when we got there and we got a table right away. You order at the till and they bring out the food. I ordered 2 bacon cheeseburgers on whole wheat buns, 2 milk shakes and yam fries. I got mushroom and fried onion on my burger and the whole bill came to pretty much $ 30.00. We had to go back and order another grilled cheese for our little guy and that came to $ 5.00 with tax. The burger was good. It definitely tasted better than McDonald’s(as it should for the price) and I didn’t feel gross after eating it. It wasn’t too greasy and I loved the onions and mushrooms on it. They get extra points for having whole wheat bun option. It just feels healthier than eating the burger on a white bun. They have a yaletown option which they replace the bun with lettuce. I thought about it but then quickly dismissed the idea. But maybe I will give it a try next time and see how it is. As for the milk shake, I quite liked them. I got the strawberry and hubby got the chocolate. My hubby kinda wished they had whipped cream on the milk shake. Their grilled cheese is kinda funny. It’s cheese in a bun and the cheese wasn’t completely melted. I expected a grilled cheese sandwich but it wasn’t bad. It was just different. As for the ambience, it’s very casual which is fine since we had our little guy with us. Overall, I would definitely go back for another meal at Sunset Burger if I have a craving for a burger.

It’s burger Monday! $ 3 for a beef burger, I added cheddar and got it yaletowned(no bun, wrapped in lettuce) and a meal, so fountain pop and yam fries… still came to $ 10, but burger was really good. I liked the fluffiness and flavor much better than Romer’s. Also yam fries portion was huge, more than enough for 2 people. After an entire weekend riding in whistler, a whackload of meat and some carbs were exactly what I needed. Definitely recommend.

This was my second venture to Sunset Burger and I’m glad that I gave the Sunset a second chance. My first visit there left me feeling as if I was at a certain fast food hamburger chain. This time, I was very impressed with the boiger I had. I had the standard kobe beef burger. It is now a standard 5oz patty instead of 4oz, something that makes the price a bit more bearable. This time it was if I tasted something utterly different than my first visit there. I don’t know if it was because of the different toppings I put on it this time — no mustard and I went with grilled mushrooms — mui impressivo! The burger was moist and very tasty. Had I eaten it slower, I’m sure I would have savoured the flavours. No need to hold it against Sunset Burger that they make such a tasty burger that I had to gobble it up! I cannot honestly say I would go back — I do find it a bit of a pricey venture for a burger and fries there. I would recommend to everyone who is looking for a delectable burger to give the Sunset Burger a fair shot.

I’ve been there only once and I’m headed to Sunset Burgers again as soon as I’m finished this quick review. It’s everything you’ve probably already heard Sunset Burgers to be: tasty California-style cuisine in a setting that evokes the very best of the ‘90s(if «the best» even really exists). I had the classic burger with cheese and a few trimmings. It was ready fast, handed to me kindly and tasted exactly as good as I expected it to — and at a really reasonable price for a Kobe beef patty. If my next experience is as good as my first, I’ll bump it up to five stars.

* Typical medium food burger * I wouldn’t call this spot fast food. It is slightly above typical fast food in terms of quality. But not too far — and certainly not far enough to justify the pricing. The burger combo worked out to $ 11 with tax. That should be a premium burger. Granted they are doing that annoying marketing bit about, «Kobe beef» even though there is no way in hell that was true Kobe beef. Perhaps Alberta wagyu. But no way was it Kobe. And why would you waste Kobe on a burger in the first place? But I digress… The burger was fairly typical fast food style but a bit thicker and slightly juicier, and took longer to get to the table. Many of the condiments are complimentary. I got a bacon burger with mushrooms and BBQ sauce. The patty itself was juicy, but did not have a proper sear on it. The bun was fairly typical commercial grade. Lettuce and tomato were fresh, and mushrooms were a bit overcooked to the point of being a little mushy. BBQ sauce was typical supermarket squeeze bottle variety. Overall I was underwhelmed with my burger. Photo: Fries were too heavily salted and did not taste particularly freshly cut. I think they were commercial frozen. But I could be wrong. They were not as hot as I like them. That was probably partially due to the server who got called by the kitchen and ignored the call for about 2 minutes. Hence this not being fast food, but just medium food. Boo. Photo: Annoying slow server also then came by later to check on the quality with the ever annoying, «How’s the burger bro?» comment. Somehow when someone says that with a Canadian accent it just gives the impression of trying to imitate Southern California and not doing a good job at it. Double boo. Overall there are much better burgers available in town for much better value, where you don’t have to suffer from being called«bro» in a Canadian accent.

Sunset puts together almost all the components of a great fast food style burger: the bun is the white, squishy kind, the tomatoes and lettuce are both fresh, and they’ve got a mayo/ketchup based special sauce. Unfortunately, they fall a bit short in the meat department. The Kobe thing might seem like a selling point, but Kobe’s so tender, it tends to result in a burger patty that’s a bit on the soft side. Also, Kobe’s other lovely attribute – the marbling – isn’t that big of a deal, since you can just add extra fat to ground beef, if needed. Give me freshly ground chuck from a regular breed of cow instead. There wasn’t much of a sear on the patty either, which sort of compounded the patty being a bit too soft. I stole an onion ring from one of my dining companions and it was a pretty standard, pretty good ring. The fries, however, were awesome, especially paired with a side of Sunset sauce. Oh, and they have beer, which is always a plus. Overall, it’s not a destination dining place for me, but if you’re in the area and need a bite, you could do worse, especially if you’re forgoing the burgers and just having a beer and some fries on the patio. Nimby’s(yes, yes, I know, you used to live in California and it’s NOT In-n-Out) still the Vancouver king of the fast food style burger.

What makes this burger joint unique and true to its Vancouver location, is the option to «Yaletown» your burger — replace your burger bun with a lettuce wrap instead. I «yaletowned» my Sunset Burger and really enjoyed it. The lettuce was fresh and crisp, and because the burger was wrapped in foil, it was easy to eat without getting your fingers messy. If I come back here again, I’d for sure«Yaletown» my burger again.
