This place is awesome! Probably some of the best tacos I have eaten. They use really good meat and cook it perfectly. They have friendly service, too. Definitely recommend this place!

Our last lunch after a week in Sayulita– did you know that al pastor is only a night time meal in these parts? We tried and failed to find one last al pastor taco, so instead we ended up at El Itacate. An itacate is a burrito of sorts that’s filled with grilled veggies, your choice of meat, and then wrapped in a layer of shredded and then grilled cheese. It’s kind of a gut bomb and not my kind of thing, but I can definitely see its appeal. I did really love the variety of salsas, pickles, grilled onions that accompanied our meal. Great agua frescas too!

This place is the best! The itacate puerco is my fave, but I’ll keep going back until I’ve tried them all !

Yum. Street tacos don’t get much better than this. Fresh and delicious, steak, fish, chicken or vegetarian, this place nails it.

Some of the best tacos I’ve ever had in my life! They load the tortillas with so much meat you can hardly fold them and eat them. They even have a bunch of vegan options which are just as good. Try the exotic flavored waters they have. Basil-lemon, I know, it sounds kinda crazy but it’s really good and refreshing especially if you’ve been out in the sun the whole day. Big Thumbs up!

There are good restaurants that are merely good, and then there are good restaurants that are revelations — the kind of place that make you understand, for the first time, why a particular food even exists. El Itacate is a revelation. I now understand why chiles rellenos exist, and apparently they exist in order to be put in tacos. I know that may sound weird, but you’ll just have to trust me on this until you come and try it for yourself. The chile provides a sour/sweet vegetable base against the intense salty richness of the cheese, and the taco is piled with other vegetables as well. The best vegetarian taco I have ever had is a chile relleno, and the best chile relleno I have ever had was in this taco. And the wonders of El Itacate don’t end there. Inspired by the chile relleno I tried the garlic mushroom taco(«hongos al ajillo»), a treat of garlicky earthy intensity. These vegetable tacos are just fabulous,(There are meat-based tacos too, and the quality of the meat is quite high, but they don’t seem to get the flame hot enough to really brown or blacken the meat, and ordering another steak taco would mean one fewer vegetable taco…). This spread also comes with three different salsas, including an excellent rendition of the elusive salsa macha(a good match for the chile relleno), chopped onions and cilantro, and a delicious combination of lightly cooked onions and habanero peppers. We came here for lunch and liked it so much that we stuffed ourselves and then came back the same day for dinner.
