You don’t need to be a teenager, a mutant or a turtle to become a fan of Al Volvo pizza! Luca and his team make a bloody good Margherita! The Miki is also worth a mention, it really is one of the best white pizzas around. To top it all off, you get pretty good service too. Besides, if you have any clue at all about how strict and precise the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana guidelines are, you would be totally appreciative of their efforts. In fact, after viewing the AVPN’s tedious list of rules and regulations it’s a small wonder that anyone dares to take on the challenge of making Neapolitan-style pizza — at all!

Al Volo uses the best cheese in Auckland in my opinion — from Il Casaro and decent salami and a tastier tomato sauce too. If you want authentic Italian Pizza I think you get it here. It’s a buzzing little place with only a handful of tables but great for an easy option out. Try the house special«Al Volo» pizza. Service was good from Luca’s wife and Luca has a good sense of humour. A little glitch with the bill at the end put a little dampener on the night though. If you want a drink with your dinner there is a wine menu or go to the bar just over the road, The Corner Store, and order your pizza from there. They have a splendid selection.

Delicious pizza! I have never been to this pizzeria before — until now. I purchased a ‘deal’ online so decided to sway from my other favs. There were a few choices: Calabrese, Cotto, Cotto e Funghi, Margherita, Romana and some others. Decided on the Cotto e Funghi(Mozzarella, Cooked Ham, Mushrooms, Oregano) normally $ 24.50& Calabrese(Spicy Salami & Mozzarella) normally $ 22.50. Both pizzas were flavoursome, thin crust, traditionally ‘Neopolitan’; cooked on stone in a wood-fire oven! All the staff are Italian so extremely authentic. They also do salads from $ 12& desert from $ 10. Profiteroles anyone? Thoroughly enjoyed the entire pizza! Ha! You can order on-line, they have a Facebook page with regular updates & also opt to dine-in. Unilocaled!

This place is legit. Authentic, Neapolitan-style pizza made with fresh, simple ingredients — just like pizza should be… All of the pizzas we tried were tasty but easily our favourite was the Miki, which is made sans tomato sauce with thinly sliced potato, beautiful bresaola(air-cured beef), rocket, parmesan and a generous drizzle of truffle oil. It’s pizzas like this that make me think all is right in the world… Also, shout out to the owner Luca who sat down with us at the end of our meal and shared some of his pizza knowledge. He is clearly really passionate about making sure that his pizza is as authentic as possible and made with really high quality ingredients. What a champ!

Best pizza I’ve had in a long time, the Miki in particular — it’s a white pizza(in that it has no tomato sauce), topped with bresaola, thinly shaved potato, the freshest burrata, then flavoured with rosemary and truffle oil. Superb! The dough is made in a traditional way, and you can really taste the difference. I got excited about a tiramisu pizza, but alas it was multiple layers of savoury ingredients, not a sweet one. The actual tiramisu dessert was the owner’s special recipe, using mascarpone from Il Casaro and the best Marsala. Luca, owner and chef, is one enthusiastic and passionate Italian. Look out for some of his recipes in Taste magazine.

I distinctly remember walking by Al Volo four years again on a discovering Mt Eden adventure and thought to myself, «must try this place…» Finally years later, after forgetfulness and oblivion I have finally tried them and its been truly a bittersweet victory! Sweet victory that I finally found Napoli style pizza that really turns my crank but bitter that I have been missing out all this time! I got the Tiramisu pizza which has ham, salami, artichoke, mushroom, mozzarella, and green olives. My friend got the mici which was mozzarella, parmesan, extra cured air dryed prosciutto, and potatoes. Both were most excellent and quite filling. So much so that I actually had some to take home which is a rarity in the Auckland dining scene. The owners are super friendly and so super passionate about their pizza that you can actually taste it in the crust if you close your eyes. For me, getting pizza into the territory of great from good, is all about the crust and man their crust is the business. Crispy on the outside, just moist enough on the inside and actually flavorsome. I can’t wait to go back and evangelize to all the greatness of Al Volo!

We came across this place quite by accident. I tried the Cotto e Funghi and my wife had Sud Pacifico. We were both suitable full after these lovely pizza’s. Could be dangerous if we lived closer !!!

YUMYUMYUMYUM I can’t believe i haven’t been here sooner. A friend and i grabbed a takeaway pizza from here over the festive season. The menu is incredible, so many yummy options. We were both feeling a little unadventurous so we had the margarita to share. It was AMAZING, fresh tomatoes, tons of basil and just the right amount of cheese. The bases are all made fresh which just adds to the experience. Can’t go past a fresh base in my opinion. The service was fast and very friendly. A few people were eating in which looked pleasant, its a very chilled environment. Can’t wait to get back and try some of the other pizzas. This place is a hidden gem!

On first look we were nonplussed — outdoor chairs inside, a savoury pizza named tiramisu(what?!) but we gave it a shot anyway — and the food was great. Definitely recommend dolce pizza(dessert pizza) — custard and blueberries on a full size pizza base! We were glad to get a good two course meal and drinks for two for $ 50. Service was a bit overbearing but the waitress has only good intentions. Very satisfying dinner.

Al Volo is really great because the name is A LOT of fun to say. I like how you can get really breathy and sensual with it. That’s a definite plus. Add to that the fact that the pizza from this joint is bloody nice and you’ve got a really winning combination. They do their pizza in wood fire ovens, which is always a great idea. I love that delicious smokey flavour that you get with wood fire pizza. And the bases are always nice and crispy with a few scrumptious little burned bits. I get the plain cheese because I’m boring and habitual, but they have a wide variety of toppings and flavours on offer. Four stars.

A while ago if I wanted a pizza take-away, I would have gone somewhere like Hell’s or Dominoes but that was before I discovered Al Volo’s! They are so good here because they are thin and crispy and you don’t get that stodgy feeling after them like you do with other take-away pizza’s. Here you can also request little to no cheese which I often do and I just get more of their other ingredients, so yum! You can order online which takes all the fuss out of things and I just go and pick them up when they are ready. Be aware that these pizza’s aren’t cheap cheap, if you are wanting $ 4.99 hawaiian pick up you won’t find it here but I think you know where to go ya cheapskates :) These taste BEAUTIFUL, the ingredients are so fresh and having them wood-fired just adds this depth in taste like nothing else mmmmm, one pizza is the perfect size for me they aren’t really sharing size because they are thin.

When looking around for somewhere to eat near the top of Mt Eden Road, we stumbled upon this little pizza place and decided to give it a try. And I’m so glad that we did. We were greeted with a friendly Italian welcome as soon as we entered the door, and were shown to our table. The interior is not the fanciest, with small tables and plastic chairs, but they are red which is consistent with the Italian theme I guess. The pizzas here are made from scratch, and the kitchen is so close that you can see most of what’s going on behind the scenes, which is pretty cool. The food doesn’t take long to make and the end result is a quality Italian pizza made by Italians the traditional way. It can seem a little pricey for one pizza, but definitely worth it.

Al Volo in 5 easy bullet points: 1. It’s authentic Italian pizza. They have a giant woodfire, the toppings are simple, the bases are light. 2. Authentic Italian pizzas don’t come cheap. They range from $ 14.50 for plain cheese, to $ 28.50 for the ‘Al Volo’ — Buffalo Mozzarella, fresh tomatoes, roquette, E.V.O.O., for example. 3. Two people could share a pizza for dinner, but definitely no more. I could probably eat a whole one to myself. 4. There are a few tables to sit at, but takeout is their main business. 5. You can order your pizza and eat it across the road at The Corner Bar, which is pretty awesome if you want to get your drink on.
