Kati, oh Kati, you were so good, we went back to you twice before our trip was over. Perhaps it’s because our India options are limited in Hawaii where we come from, but we were totally enamored by the Kati rolls we got on our first night in Auckland. We got the chicken tikka and veggie Kati rolls the first night. The flavor was spot on. The heat was just right. The veggie, especially, really packed a flavor punch. We also got a lamb roll the second time we went and that too had a great flavor. Make sure you don’t miss the masala chips(fries to us Americans). They are SO good — perfectly crispy and with such awesome flavor. We found that one order was big enough for us both to share with a roll, so don’t be afraid to split an order. We’ll definitely be back for you Kati!

I went for lunch with a group of four on a Friday afternoon. I wanted to try to butter chicken and rice but was told by the chef that it was out. :(He told us anything else we ordered would take 20 minutes. We decided that was no problem. Next thing that sounded good was the chicken tikka wrap. Chicken was flavorful and wrap contained a ton of yummy sautéed veggies. I wish I had asked for a sauce, as I wanted a little bit more sauciness in my wrap. But flavors were good. I also ordered the Aloo Tiki Chaat. It was really good, I recommend it!

This is a must-visit restaurant if you love Indian food and are in Auckland. The tandoori chicken drumsticks are the best I have had except for a restaurant in Washington DC that is not even around anymore. My only suggestions to the owners are to cut their own potatoes for their chips and to offer cube lamb as well as the mince lamb that I got which was also excellent. Well done!

Bought a voucher to try, glad I didn’t pay full price. The butter chicken roti roll was so scarcely filled I vowed never to go back there.

This place is a flavor bomb! The food is intense. The Kati is to Indian what burrito is to Mexican, except a kati bread is so tasty and fresh! The masala fries are a special blend of spices that are unique and pack a kick. The guys here are helpful and work hard to please!

I must confess, I’m a katiholic for want of a better word. I’ve been here 3 times this week and I could pretty much go there again tomorrow :) For a vegetarian and a lover of street food this place is food Nirvana. The Achari paneer is my favorite followed by the butter paneer. Portions are generous and the masala chips have a uniqueness to them. Only downside is the café next door invariably has smokers outside and the wind blows in choking you with a generous doze of second hand smoke. No fault of the owners though. PS: Don’t forget to specify mild, medium of hot because I’ve been stung a couple of times with a super hot Kati that makes you regret going there the next day: p

We were recommended to try this place next time we were in town. I ordered the chilli chicken and rice and my wife ordered the butter chicken wrap. After waiting a wee while for our food, we were not disappointed with the result. My wife said the wrap tasted lovely and fresh, mine was also tasted very good. In our passion to order we did not spot the Mango Lassi’s, good reason to return and try their other dishes. The décor is typical take away, but the food is definitely not !!! Looking forward to next visit :-)

A bright and white, hole-in-the-wall joint next to K’ Road’s Ironbank, Kati Grill serves kati rolls, a popular Indian street food consisting of a paratha(flat bread) wrapped around a layer of egg and meat that has been roasted in the tandoor oven. The menu consists mostly of kati rolls with some familiar fillings(chicken tikka masala, butter chicken) and some less recognisable(chicken hariyali, reshmi chicken); there are also a large number of vegetarian and vegan options that my vegetarian dining companion Sam ogled with glee. For the carb-phobics you can remove the paratha and order a meat or paneer platter instead. There are a small number of rice-based mains and some interesting sounding sides, including masala chips, crunchy munchy corn and filled parathas. I ordered a lamb seekh kati roll combo($ 13.80), which came with a side of masala chips and a bottled soft drink whilst Sam ordered the veggie kati roll combo and a mango lassi($ 15.50). Feeling greedy, I also ordered a side of paneer pakoda($ 4.90) for us to share. Sam’s mango lassi was a gorgeous golden yellow with an honest mango flavour, although it was disconcertingly thick and creamy compared to the lassies we were used to, the texture more dessert-like than drink-like. Our kati rolls were first to arrive, cutely packaged in colourful cardboard tubes reminiscent of McDonald’s hot apple pies. The paratha that encased my seekh kebab was nicely chewy and lightly blistered all over; the seekh kebab itself was pleasingly red from the tandoor marinade and fragrantly spicy as requested(they cater for mild palates as well). The lamb was lean and tender, with the accompanying sautéed onions and peppers adding a nice crunch, whilst the mint chutney was tangy and warm with ginger. Then came the masala chips, followed by the paneer pakoda, both of which were hot and fresh from the deep fryer. I feel like I’ve discovered India’s answer to the much loved KFC fries; coated in several different aromatic spices, the masala chips were ridiculously moreish. The paneer pakoda were slices of Indian cottage cheese, coated in a chickpea batter reddened with spices and then flash fried till crispy, before finally being sprinkled with the mysterious masala concoction and served alongside their mint chutney. These were surprisingly bland for my taste despite their spicy treatment although texture-wise it ticked all the boxes. Whether you’re looking for a quick and easy dinner out or a early-morning kebab to soak up the residual alcohol leftover from a night out, if you love a bit of spice or have a hankering for something out of the ordinary, then you should try Kati Grill.

I’m amazed this idea hasn’t popped up on or around K’Rd earlier, and now that it’s here I have no doubt it’ll catch on and spread. I’m fine with that, because this place is great. It’s totally the best of both worlds — all the ease and convenience of a burrito or kebab, with the interesting flavours and subtlety of a good curry. The one I had(chicken something?) was really nice, and a good amount of spicy(bearing in mind that I like spicy food — other, with more sensitive mouths, might find it a touch aggressive. But I think you can ask them to make it mild). Overall it was a really good mid-afternoon snack/meal. Plus, masala chips are delicious. Fact. And if all that wasn’t enough: the wrap comes in a cardboard tube like the apple pies at McDonald’s used to. Remember them? Yeah. So there’s a nice touch of nostalgia there as a bonus.

I’m obsessed with burritos; literally, they’ve been my lunchtime staple at least once a week, every week for the last few months. However, as the saying goes, you can have too much of a good thing. Hence why I decided to broaden my horizons and head to Kati Grill on K Road. OK so «broadening my horizons» might be a bit of an overstatement as essentially, Kati wraps are like Indian versions of burritos; however flavours and spices are totally different. I had a chicken tikka Kati wrap(a Kati is an Indian roti-like flatbread that is filled with meat or paneer) and it was delicious. Filled with great quality chicken tikka, onions and green peppers, the wrap was comparable to a similar thing I had in Penang. It was really fresh tasting and not soggy at all(an issue I often have with burritos). For $ 9.90, it’s about the same price as a burrito from Mexicali or California Burrito, and like those establishments, Kati Grill is a quick order at the counter type and wait type of place. You can either eat in there in their ample seating area or choose to have your wrap takeaway. Think I’ve definitely got a new lunchtime obsession.
