Rasoi does have quite a good following with the veggie curry followers– and especially with those who love vegetarian food. I usually would enjoy Rasoi once a week as a close friend lives close by and is in love with the samosa’s and tamarind chutney that they sell. Walking past Rasoi on K rd, one would probably walk by if it wasn’t for the colourful attractive Indian sweets lining the plates in the window display. I think this is a fantastic marketing ploy that pulls in the street walker. If you are after a curry, order in at the counter they have freshly made roti, poppadoms, you name it, they got it. Rasoi means Cooking in Gujarati and they do this with all their heart. As they follow traditional ways the restaurant remains very tidy and with minimal clutter. The food is cheap but the value is priceless when you look at the health benefits.

I think I stared in the windows of Rasoi for about 10 years before actually making my way in. The colourful sweet items in the window seemed so enticing — who wouldn’t want a tri-coloured slice named after the rainbow? Who wouldn’t want to see if these things tasted as good as they looked. Me, apparently, given how long it took me to walk through the door. I ended up getting a super cheap meal to start, which was great — I really liked every hot item they had on offer and loved the price too. My dessert — a piece of rainbow barfi — unfortunately lived up to its name. Dry and tasteless, the barfi was the thing that enticed me but the thing I’d never go back for.

You: «Hold on. You’re trying to tell me that that piece of shit place gets five stars!?» Me: «I am. I really am.» You: «You better explain why. Because I’m confused. I can’t see beyond the grotty exterior and interior.» Me: «You knucklehead. Look past all that superficial stuff. This place has a goddamn heart of gold!» You: «Is this just because you’re a vegetarian?» Me: «Maybe subconsciously. But I don’t think so.» You: «I thought you didn’t like Indian food.» Me: «Well I like Rasoi.» You: «Why?» Me: «I’m really really into the metal cups and plates they have for one thing.» You: «I thought you said to look past the superficial stuff.» Me: «I did. I’m a hypocrite. But I’m a hypocrite who really loves the incredibly cheap Indian food they sell at Rasoi. And also their metal plates and cups.» You: «Cool. Sounds good.» Me: «It is good.»

It took me a while to pluck up the courage to try one of the traditional Indian sweets that Rasoi displays in its window. People come from all over Auckland to pick up these colourful little treats, so I thought I’d better see what all the fuss was about. Indian sweets definitely have very different flavours and textures than their Western counterparts, but I’m sure you’ll find something to your taste. My favourite is the pistachio flavoured one. But there’s plenty to more to Rasoi than the sweets, and don’t let the simple interior put you off. The Gujarat-style southern Indian food offers a huge range for vegetarians on a budget, and a number of dishes are also vegan. Gluten-free eaters do well here too. I actually think all the dishes here are delicious, but standouts have to be the dal, the dosas, and the masala chai.
