Fantastic food great value I sat down for a meal and was concerned I was the only one in this little place but in the time it took to drink a cup of tea I watched over 20 people come in to collect takeaway. The place is simple and was a little cold on a nasty winter night but the food. Oh the food

Almost tried every single Asian BBq place. This place is definitely not my favourite. The food was super average and service was poor. When I ordered roast pork, it almost seem like left over with tons of fatty bits and hardly any meat. The duck was the same, as we ordered a whole duck and is missing one of the leg and wing… Who knows what happen with that. But we did get double duck neck… Lol

Oh, Love a Duck! How I love your scrumptious ducks!!! This was my first visit to one of their restaurants in at least two years & I have never been one to stray far from any of their duck dishes, especially the duck noodle soup. Therefore it was a no brainer to order the above dish and I opted to add wontons for an extra $ 2. The soup came out in less than ten minutes and was streaming hot & full to the brim with fragrant noodles, meat and broth. The broth was so flavoursome on it’s own & the duck was 10 out of 10 — succulent, juicy, packed with flavour with just the right amount of fat. The wontons were really flavoursome too — nothing like the run of the mill kind you get at chinese fish & chip shops. I am looking forward to a repeat visit in the next few days as my trip to Mt Eden was mainly to get a pair of boots repaired, a shop that was highly recommended by Unilocalers. My visit to Love a Duck on Dominion Road makes me wonder why I haven’t visited their Northcote branch in ages!

The only thing A about this place is the hygiene certificate on the wall, everything else is C at best. The service is lacking and unfriendly The food is greasy and given the name would suggest the duck is a speciality… it is not, at all. Tea is free and we managed to make the left overs taste better later at home which gave this place it’s second star.

Do they Love a Duck or are they asking me question? Are they asking me if I Love a Duck? It makes no difference in the end, all parties involved surely love ducks very very much. More of a traditional Chinese restaurant menu style, where you order a few dishes for everybody to share. So it is kind of a difficult restaurant to eat at if you are by yourself, I was made to feel like a total loner when the waitress asked me, «Oh…are you just here eating by yourself?». Perfect for two people though, you just have to order one plate of duck to share and a few bowls of rice, and the duck dish came with a side of broccoli so it was a complete meal. The duck here is meaty and delicious, they don’t give you all the shady neck off cuts like some other Asian restaurants.

I’ve only been here once and I’m not actually sure why I haven’t been back, because I quite enjoyed my dining experience here. We went as a big group and it should be the only way you order food here — everyone orders something and you all share, so you get a good range of dishes, and you get to try lots of different things you might not otherwise try. And I like to have a range of food on my plate, not just one dish, which is why these kind of dining experiences appeal to me. I do remember when we went, everyone brought a bottle of wine, so between all of us it was a pretty messy, yet delicious, evening.

First of all, to avoid confusion — there are two Love a Ducks on Dominion Road. This is not the one in Balmoral near New Flavour. This is the one underneath Valentines in Mt Eden. I came here for a friend’s birthday so we were eating as a big group, and that’s how I’d recommend experiencing Love a Duck. Like many Chinese restaurants it’s far better to get several dishes to share between the lot of you — that way you get to try more things without over-ordering. The food itself is really good, although the night we went we had to wait a little while for it. When it did arrive it was the usual range you’d expect from any good Chinese place. Depending on who you went with you could lean your order more towards the meat end or the vegetarian end of the menu, and have a good meal either way. Also you can BYO wine, which is good to know.
