Don’t go here if you’re already hungry. We are from the United States, and I don’t think the waitress understood us. There was a table that sat down 20 minutes after us and got their food before us. We ordered the seafood sampler meal, which was the best out of 4 dishes. The other meals weren’t what they were suppose to be. My shrimp were suppose to be pan fried but they they came out just steamed with my pasta. We were there for a total of 2 hours, and that’s a long time even when your on vacation.

Pizza looked and tasted as though it came from the freezer. A small sad pizza which I try to avoid at the supermarket. Although 5 companions enjoyed their food this let it all down. Try a different Italian restaurant before this one. Service was haphazard at best.

One of my favorite restaurants in Auckland. Possibly because they got closest to a real Italian meal. Started with excellent squid which Auckland is certainly known for. Ordered a prosciutto pizza and sure enough nothing weird it was rather authentic. Excellent wine. Good service. My husband had clams with white wine sauce and pasta and loved it. Had a kick to it I hear but was too full to try

Food was average and the staff weren’t very friendly. When I went to pay for the meal the person didn’t even thank me afterwards — won’t be returning

Great location, but that’s all the merit it has. We ordered the pesto panne, which was extremely salty, just not edible. Then the fettuccine putanesca and fettuccine con pollo. The chicken was barely cooked and also salty. The sauce was the work of a 8yo child playing with alfredo sauce from the grocery store and some herbs. The pasta was on the hard side. The putanesca sauce was good, but also not great. Given their prices, you’re bound to find better italian food elsewhere.

Wife wanted more oysters. … so… we landed here. She ordered 10 and wanted more … Ordered another 10. I got the prosciutto plate. She liked her oysters and my plate was okay. The service was okay but a little clunky. The bill was heavy… Wife called this place pretty good but it’s my Unilocal post. Smile. I hope she doesn’t want to go back… hehehe.

Well. One would expect that based on the prices on the menu, there’s going to be quality food and excellent service. Food was fair at best, when we asked for more parmesan… out came the processed powder instead of nicely shaved quality cheese. As for the service, mediocre at best. No recommendations or suggestions on anything on the menu. I would not recommend this restaurant.

Just awful. For reasons to numerous to list but starting with the service. It like being in Faulty Towers but sadly lacking the warmth. There are plenty of other places nearby with good food & genuine service.

I’ve been politelly kicked out of this place. Our waiter was awesome, but the maitre was exatcly the oposite. Offering us terrible seats and asking the waiter to give us the bill just after we finished our meals. Looked like she wanted our seats for some other people ASAP. The food is average and a bit pricey for the quality. My pizza looked like a frozen one and my wife’s pasta was nothing exceptional as well.

I am a wee bit critical of the Portofino chain, simply because I find alot of their dishes to be a little pricey for what are basically textbook Italian dishes with lots of parmesan. I also didn’t massively enjoy my last meal here which was this sort of veal rolled up in bacon and cheese — mainly because it was presented badly. But I digress, I will say that it’s got a really cool vibe located as it is right on the Viaduct, and it’s absolutely perfect for those big group dinner occasions. We did a surprise dinner for a friend here a little while back, and this necessitated a table for around 25 — a nightmare at most restaurants, but Portofino did it with aplomb.

I have been to the real Portofino in Italy several times, along with all the amazing memories I also remember I paid NZ$ 20 for a glass of coke by the sea, and got yelled at by a waiter for trying to order a pizza with more than one topping. Dining at Portofino at the viaduct was a far more pleasant experience than either of those things. I like the fact they serve minestrone soup, as I am convinced I could eat it every single day and never get sick of it. I also like the Italian style menu, although they have adapted to the NZ single main style of eating which is good. For waterfront dining the prices are also not too bad.

Now the interesting thing about this restaurant is that no one I have ever talked to about it(even though that is only like, 4 people) has seemed to like it. I, however, found it great. I went here on a date and ordered a few drinks and the risotto de pollo which was delicious. I have a faint idea about why this may be — being that I am easily pleased by any meal that is put in front of me as I just love food so much. The waiter was very nice and helpful with menu item information and the service was quick, also the prices are pretty reasonable. Perhaps my friends are just snobby.
