We were recommended this place by a local. Came here for late lunch and had the pork mofongo(never had it before). it was DELICIOUS. Great happy hour specials too($ 4 wells, $ 2 beer, very cheap shots). Friendly service and a good location. We sat outside, and the fans were just enough to keep us cool. There’s also an indoor air conditioned area. Definitely would recommend for dinner/late lunch. Can’t comment on breakfast, since we were too late.

Always, Always, go where the locals go. We were among 30 groups of people in the place, and I was one of 4 gringos! Great team style service with predictive staff. Mofongo was among the best, and the drinks were loaded and huge! Yes, its in the hotel tourist district, so expect to pay accordingly, but it was ½ the price of many of their competitors and twice as good. you can choose from air conditioned inside to inside without AC to street side where all the action is!

Excellent if you want something local and laid back. This is a place you go in your bathing suit or super casual . There is inside and out sitting. The Mojo fish was delicious and if you like sweets the Tres Leches dessert if super good.

At this point of our vacation we’ve already been all over Puerto Rico. We knew we were in a touristy area. We knew we may not be getting the most authentic Puerto Rican experience around here. The front desk of our hotel recommended this spot, along with another spot up the block as being the most authentic in the area. So we came by for dessert after frolicking at the beach all night.(Oh, what fun!) Dessert was pretty good, but not amazing. All we had was flan, coconut and vanilla. A bit firm for my preference, but I love that they weren’t excessively sweet. Barely tasted the coconut in the coconut version, but it was still good. Good enough for us to come back for breakfast the next day. Breakfast was AMAZINGLY good and priced well. Great service on both visits: friendly and prompt!

Can I just say food always taste better when there is an attractive waiter serving you, I find myself becoming more needy(«can I please have more napkins» or «can I please have more water» when I have a full glass). Almost every server here is nice looking, wondering if this is a requirement… hmm. Anywho, we came here because the food pictures on Unilocal looked good & we were hungry. Let me tell you that the service here is good. We ere greeted by a host who immediately was cracking jokes when we walked in, he was of course nice looking. Then our server, another nice looking individual, came over to take our drink orders. I ordered the pollo sapao(«chicken gumbo»). Now, please don’t confuse this to your typical southern US gumbo. This meal was more of a «loaded soup», which vegetables, chicken & rice that came with flat fried plantains. It tasted good, I was not able to finish it because there were several gnats bother the hell out of me so I took my food today. My sister ordered the beef steak mofongo, and she said that the meat was a bit dry, she was not a fan. The n there was another staff member who gave us the bill and he was nice looking. Cherise, why are you only giving this place 3? You maybe asking, well the 3 stars are mainly for the service & servers ;) I can do with out the food, I doubt I would come here again, if I do I would try the frozen cocktails that they offer.

We were headed to Pinky’s for breakfast but there was a guy standing in the street trying to get people do come here for breakfast. Most of the Unilocal Reviews I read for this place were good, they were mainly for lunch/dinner but since we already had Pinky’s the day before & the line was long we decided to eat here. My husband and I ordered pancakes with Ham. We didn’t realize that the ham we would be served just was cooked lunch meat which tasted awful. We were expecting a nice ham steak like some of the other places served. I asked for a side of bacon, which wasn’t much better than the ham. When I bit into the bacon you could tell it wasn’t fresh & it has been sitting for quite some time. The pancakes and eggs were ok, nothing spectacular, something I could of gotten at ihop. Overall, the prices were low, service was fast and the breakfast food is mediocre.

GOODFOOD, DON’T PAYWITHYOURCREDITCARD! This would have gotten 5 stars, but our waiter literally over charged our credit card tip and the service was NOT that good. First food: We ordered the Bolitas de Platano(deep fried plantain balls) as an appetizer. They were way too hot when they came out but really good when the cooled down. A little greasy, but tasty and slightly sweet — definitely will help if you’re planning to take a nap on the beach. I had the Cuban sandwich which was AMAZING — literally the best Cuban I’ve ever had. My wife had the roast pork sandwich, which was also AMAZING. Really to just rate on the food, I would have given a 5 star for lunch. Location /Greeting: The location is great, just across the street from the most famous beach in San Juan. The greeter was over the top cool. He helped people get across the street, started some great conversation, and was just overall a really nice guy. The environment is open aired with some decent music and a fun, kind of loud environment. Ok for kids, but probably not ideal. Service: The service was mediocre at best for a slightly busy afternoon. Our server waited way too long between refills and to get our order, and the food took way too long to arrive considering what we ordered. Here’ the biggest problem — when we finally got our check, some other waiter(not the guys serving us the whole time) took our card to charge it. This took WAYYYYY too long to swipe a credit card and type in a dollar amount. To my knowledge the card wasn’t stolen or anything, but I tipped 18% standard gratuity before I walked out. This a**hole decided to ADDANEXTRA $ 10 on his own, absolutely NOT matching what I wrote before leaving, literally taking 50% gratuity! Conclusion: Good food, fun environment, good location, and good prices. BUTPAYWITHCASH, do NOTGIVETHEMYOURCREDITCARD!

Good casual/clean atmosphere. Open air dining, as well as an area inside. We went for a late breakfast during the week. Staff was friendly and attentive. We got a pretty simple and straight forward 2-sided menu. I believe it was only for lunch/breakfast(See pics). We decided on breakfast, which was pretty good. However, if you order the Western Omlet, expect that it prepared with all of the vegetables and runny cheese wrapped in side of the egg, not actually cooked into the omlet itself. It still tasted pretty good. The break was excellent! Also, I asked for a side of pernil and hot sauce. Both were phenomenal. The prices here are very reasonable. Much cheaper than anything you will find at a hotel. The only thing I’m not a fan of is that they charge for beverage refills, including fountain soda… That’s kind of booty considering a cup of soda probably costs the restaurant $.07. I’d rather they raised the price from $ 2 per cup to $ 2.50 or $ 3 and not charge for the refill, but that’s just coming from a guy who is always very thirsty!

We had wanted to eat at Pinky’s next door, but the wait was a bit too long for our appetite, which was nearing the hangry level. I pulled up Unilocal and saw this was next door and had great reviews. As usual, the Unilocal community delivered and we had a fabulous experience. We went on a Saturday early afternoon and were given a breakfast and regular menu. While the breakfast menu sounded promising, we decided to go for some foods we have never had before off the regular menu, because that’s what traveling is all about. We started out with a canoa. This was new to me and now I crave to have one again! It was a plantain stuffed with ground meat, drizzled in a sauce that reminded me of a queso. This was amazing and you have to try it. Like, it’s a MUST that you get this. My fiancé ordered the pork mofongo, based off of other reviews pics and raves about it. First of all, this is huge. We could’ve split it and still not finished it. The sauces, pork, plantains… everything about this concoction was perfection. I ordered a the pork combo plate that came with plantains and rice. This was also something we could’ve shared because of how large the portion was. This was delicious as well. I paired it with red sangria, which was a little too sweet for me, but if you like sweeter drinks, I think you’ll enjoy it. The service was fine, too. We never felt neglected or waited long for drink refills, etc. When the food was taking a little longer than the waiter expected, he let us know and told us the large group near us had their order go in at the same time, and that’s totally understandable, so not a big deal at all. Last but not least, I wish I could order their house hot sauce they bring out. I’m not really into putting hot sauce on things because I’m kind of a baby when it comes to spicy additions like that, but this… heaven. If I could purchase it, I could definitely see myself putting it on every and anything!

Another day, another strong Condado Puerto Rican restaurant. Café del Angel is neatly divided into covered outside and inside portions. We chose the inside, which gave ample protection from traffic fumes and noise. Rather than stick with veggie mofongo, I went for a rice, veggies, beans and tostones combo. The beans were pleasantly soupy and flavorful(the closest taste is Clancy’s Fancy hot sauce, next closest is Worcestershire). They are the native cuisine I’ll miss most of all. The rice was savory and full of broccoli, carrots and zucchini. My tostones were crispy wedges of plantain; I would have liked them to be a little more supple. We finished with an excellent flan shaped like a big stick of butter on a plate with dabs of slightly sweet sauce and dustings of cinnamon. We felt very well cared for by our waiter, who was friendly and eager to please without being cloying. The whole experience — food, room and staff — was casual with class. There was nothing either intimidating or pretentious, much like our experience of San Juan itself.

Thanks to my fellow Unilocalers I was able to find this place with no problems. My waiter was kind of hilarious. He had a goofy hat and a large(cardboard) beer bottle in his back the whole time. We sat on the patio right in the front so we could people watch. The service was a bit slow but it was overlooked because of how friendly the waiter was. The portions are enough to share. The food was good, not great. The environment plus the waiter plus the food made it 4 stars for me. I liked the sweet plantains, but I wished they were fried a little harder. If you are in the area this is a great place to check out and grab some local fare.

Must try!!! My family and I came to Café del Angel twice during our short stay in Puerto Rico. The mofongo is to-die-for(I tried the pernil), the hot sauce is fresh and homemade, and the Cubano sandwich will stick to your ribs and stay forever in your heart! The décor isn’t much to look at, but the servers are friendly and understand English perfectly(no need to worry if you speak little Spanish) Yet — while the servers are Americanized — the food is not. It is AUTHENTIC, fresh and CHEAP! Also, the sangria is very strong if you’re looking for a buzz :)

Hola I wish there was a 10 star rating! Wow I thought when I got to Ashford Ave I knew where I was going to have lunch — the parking attendant — confirmed my few selection and here I am . Now I have to admit that I have been to this place before in January 2013… So I was looking for something different. Now I ask myself WHY! My meal was amazing — it was so good I order another SAME meal to go! The rice the beans everything So here’s the deal. If you want food the the local Puerto Rican dine at this is your place!!! There were more locals then visitors — well at least for me during the lunch hour!!! Very nice totally recommend it!!!

Passable Caribbean restaurant deep in the heart of the tourist street, Ashford. This place can’t compare to El Jibarito in Viejo San Juan but it suffices those cravings for Caribbean flavor. I’d strongly recommend eating family-style, especially if this is your first time eating Caribbean cuisine. Just so that everyone can get a taste of everything. Calamares Fritos/Breaded Squid Rings($ 8.95) — Deep fried(twice?) squid rings. Squid chewy and tasty. Generous portion and interesting mayonnaise and mustard dipping sauce. Would order this again. Pernil Asado/Roasted Pork($ 11.95) — Pork roasted perfectly. Tender and soft meat. This dish comes with two sides. We chose fried plantains and rice with pigeon peas. The fried plantains were standard. Don’t forget that the best way to eat them is with mayo-ketchup. Mixed rice was meh. Pechuga de Pollo a la Plancha con Salsa de Criolla/Grilled Chicken Breast in Criolle Sauce($ 11.95) — Chicken breast was very dry, unfortunately. For the two sides, we went with French fries and rice and beans. The beans were served separately, in a small soup bowl with a spoon. We actually thought it was tomato soup until we tasted it! French fries were typical. Dragonberry Mojito(~$ 4) — Can’t be missed! Check for the restaurant’s happy hour times.

Wow. The grouper was awesome. I admit being a bit skeptical — especially as they were handing out menus on a busy street… The Unilocal ratings drew us in & I was very impressed. The service and food were worthy of recommendation. It’s a very casual place — and a wonderful experience. We’ll be back soon. Follow up visits did happen. We were less than amazed by the fired snapper and pork dishes. The grouper, calamari were still very good, the service(while a bit too friendly) was quick, and the prices were quite good(grab a local beer).

This place is hilarious! One of the waiters literally stands outside and talks to people walking by trying to get them into the restaurant. I’m glad it was right across from our hotel because it was great food and even better people watching. We had crab mofongo which was super authentic. Arroz con pollo and chicken a la plancha were delicious too. Frozen drinks were yummy! Service was really slow but I guess they’re on island time

I’m visiting Puerto Rico for a week, and this was the first place my mom and I stopped to eat. I got grilled chicken breast with garlic sauce, rice and beans and tostones. As a drink I got a frozen passionfruit concoction. My mom ordered mofongo with crab meat. Our plates came quick, hefty, and delicious. I scarfed down the food way faster then I should have. The service was nice and attentive, and there was live music as well which was great. I wish I stayed for a tres leche cake slice, but we were way too full. The only complaint I have is my drink. Now, I may have accidentally not made it clear that my drink was alcoholic, because as yummy as it was, it was 100% virgin. And my moms was ridiculously light, too. I’d believe it if they told us there was no liquor in it. Served in a big glass but gave us no buzz or anything. But they were really tasty and perfectly frozen, so it wasn’t that much of an issue. Two big plates and two big drinks for only $ 44. DEFINITELY a steal!
