It’s all about the matcha green tea float, which was tasty and came with stevia on the side and a small ball of vanilla ice cream floating on top of the green tea made from real matcha. I wouldn’t have known about this place if it weren’t for Unilocal because there are no pictures or advertising outside the shop. That drink is merely a subtle one-liner on the menu sitting on the counter. My favorite part about the drink was how the vanilla ice cream was so cold that it started freezing the matcha green tea around it. Great for a small sit down break while walking around in Japantown or to just chill and do some reading. There were only about five tables and no outlets, so not appropriate for busting out a laptop. More for some chit chat, sketching, or reading a magazine/newspaper/book. I liked the old-timey furnishings, but it made it seem catered to an older audience. It didn’t have the frilliness of a tea room nor the hipster vibe of modern day coffee shops. More like the dusty victorian design. The service is just okay — the lady owner doesn’t really speak fluent English and isn’t very inviting either. Must be a tough life running the small coffee shop as she hardly seems to smile.

Fairly classy, quiet coffee shop tucked in a corner within the building(not the Daiso building) in Japan Town side by side to Sophie’s Crêpe. The door is cute. The setup is cute. The owner is cute. The drinks are cute. The view is cute. But, the overall matcha drink I got here was just alright. My friends and I got both the matcha float and the plain matcha tea. It was good! Don’t get me wrong! But I felt as though it was lacking. It wasn’t sweetened, and tbh, I prefer that! But, don’t know. The feel of the shop is great, but I don’t know if the drinks lived up to the fanciness of the place.

I was so excited to try the different matcha drink after reading some review on Unilocal. This cute tea place was operated by cute elderly Japanese couple. I ordered the match float and it took too long for the order to arrive. I would say it took around 15 mins to get my order when there was no other party was there. When the order was ready, I saw the color of the drink was brown. So I asked what is the drink and the lady said it was mocha float. I told her I wanted to get the matcha float. However, she insisted that I ordered the mocha float. There was no sorry or anything like that. So, I just took the drink and ate the ice cream since I did not want to argue with her and honestly did not want to wait for another 15 — 20 mins to get my drink ready. won’t definitely be back.

Easily the best place to get tea in J-town. All the Japanese teas at TanTan are legit. The floats and parfaits are also delicious — I love that you can adjust the sweetness yourself. I’ve had a few cakes on different occasions and they were all great(and not very sweet, which I enjoy). It makes me sad that there are a few people who are badmouthing the owner, who is seriously one of the sweetest ladies I’ve ever met. She’s not as confident in her English(she speaks Japanese) so she’s a bit shy and tries to be unobtrusive unless she knows the customer well or the customer tries to engage and talk with her. I’m baffled as to why that’s somehow considered«rude» by others. Sure, it might be a bit awkward, but please try to be empathetic– she’s a older lady who is honestly trying her best.

I really love the décor and the feel of this shop. It’s quiet and relaxing. The drinks are brought out to you and you drink in shop. My friend and I ordered the iced mocha, it came with a small silver pitcher, it’s a sugar syrup so you can sweeten your drink to your liking. Cute concept but the drink was powdery. I got a cream puff, nothing extraordinary about it. Not to sweet tho so my friend enjoyed it very much. It comes with cute little forks~ The prices were listed on a small menu at the front counter, I only saw the priced for the iced mocha $ 3.95 but that total came out to $ 11 so was that little cream puff really $ 7? We didn’t question the woman who ran the shop, we paid her and left a tip because that’s just how we are but she duped us. It was still nice to visit the shop and sit down but us out of towners will stay away next time.

I’m here again to try out the«Iced Coffee Float» & «Chestnut Cake»(too sweet for me). After this time I think the«Iced Green Tea Float» & «Cream Puff» tasted the best. I will be back :)

This is my favorite coffee shop in the Japan town area. The place is super cute and it’s very quiet often times so if you need a place to study or chill out, this is the place for you. The lady who runs the place is super nice and you can pre-order the cakes as a whole if you have an event coming up.

I was going to grab a bite and eat and enjoy some tea at this place, but as I walk in, the owner look confused and not inviting at all. I really wanted to leave but she ask me what I want and I said green tea. Since I already order, I guess it was too late to leave. It has an awkward atmosphere and I drank the green tea as fast as I can and left. I don’t think I will be coming back. The reason was the lady was rude and doesn’t even seem like she wanted business.

A little hole in the wall coffee shop inside of Japantown mall. There are very limited seatings, but the interior is designed like a traditional teahouse. I really liked how it was quiet, calm compared to the outside. The worker/owner isn’t really good at English though. The size of the tea is small, but is unique. Green tea is actually really dark green and they give you a side of sweetener to flavor according to your taste. I recommend this coffee shop if you’re looking for something different inside the mall.

They absolutely worth more than 5 stars, seriously. I walked by here at Sundays afternoon, its located in the jtown mall. Before I got in, I thought it might be another touristic and over priced coffee shop. BUT, its totally not! I would rather go here for the same price as Starbucks, and, its much better than it for sure. For the environment, Very elegant and European décor, I really like the atmosphere. They played the Japanese song, it totally ease my mind. And move on to the food and drinks, I m happy that they have a good taste of tea set. They charged you little, but u can tell they put effort on making sure everything is on good quality. I ordered a latte and my friend did a tea set, plus greentea cake. Everything served in a excellent presentation. I liked the cake, its moist and soft with redbean layers. Guys, don’t be shy and come on in. I know it kinda look like its member only, and the door is always half closed lol

I would come here again for the delicious coffee but not for the atmosphere. It left a strange impression on me. My friend and I almost didn’t come here initially because it looked closed. Upon closer examination, the top part of the front door was open, but the bottom was closed. No customers were inside, and the older lady who supposedly runs the place was not very inviting. We entered the coffeeshop anyways because we needed caffeine and Unilocal said it was legit. Talk about wanting to get away from the tourist scene! Felt like walking into another world with all the cute furniture and delicate-looking chinaware. It was difficult to communicate with the older lady, but we managed to order a Vienna coffee and Cappuccino. The drinks were amazing, and it really was a good way to get away from the rest of Japantown and take a break. This is not your usual café but conveniently located for your next caffeine fix!

Whenever I see people posting pictures of high tea in dainty chinaware and extravagant displays of sandwiches and pastries, part of me wishes I could afford bougeness, and another part of me thinks it’s more for the social media bragging rights than actual good food and tea. Tan Tan is halfway there! Fancy classy ambiance at a reasonable prices, plus specialty matcha drinks and desserts. Maybe my expectations ran a little too high, or maybe I’ve set impossible expectations for matcha after my matcha café expeditions in Asia. While the ambiance was nice, complete with plush cushions, lacey curtains, and an adorable two-part door, the MATCHAFLOAT that we got was underwhelming. The matcha taste was good, but the ice cream had chunks of ice. Also, it seems that they changed the glassware when we went so it turned out to be a very small serving. Even daintier, I guess.

This review is not for the food but rather for the old grumpy lady who probably owns this place. Reading the reviews this place seems like a great place for tea and snacks, however I would never visit after the rude encounter I had this past weekend. The Cherry Blossom festival was taking place this past saturday and the area was completely packed. My friends and I were in line for Sophie’s crepes and the line stretched a long way, apparently it was also blocking the entrance of «Tan Tans». Minding my own business, my friend and I were having a decent conversation when all of a sudden a grumpy old lady started making comments at us and shooing away my friend and I. I was completely confused at what was going on, but my friend’s husband was apparently paying attention and gave her a piece of his mind. She was yelling at us and saying we were in the way of her store. EXCUSEME, I just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time because it could have been ANYONE standing at the line at the time. Was I the ONLY one standing in the way? If anyone wanted to go to her café, I’m sure they would have made their way in. If I was the only one blocking her entrance, I would have gladly apologized for not knowing, but NO, there was a whole crowd of people waiting in line. HOWRUDE! She should have just yelled at the crêpe proprieters for not wrapping the line the OTHER way. Just for this encounter, I would NEVEREVER visit this place. What poor attitude and manners for a person who owns the shop! 0STARS, unfortunately I’m still required to click for a star.

Tan tan has always been one of my favorite for Japanese style coffee drinks, desserts and even Japanese sandwiches. Owner is a true Japanese who speaks mostly only japanese. There are some Japanese etiquette that needs to be followed try to let her show you the way rather than asserting your own way. No credit cards accepted! Cash only an ATM machine is located next door. Highly recommend the iced green tea float and the pastry(if there’s any, especially the matcha cake), and Vienna coffee(which is like a coffee with whipped cream my personal favorite Remember be polite and you will be treated well

The owner is quite rude and speaks broken English. I don’t understand what she says. The setting is like English tea with close window door. I ordered iced green tea float. A liquid sweetener is given on the side. I added a bit to make the green tea more flavorful. The drink is not bad but feel like very watery(green tea is not concentrated enough). The ice cream goes well with the green tea drink tho.

I haven’t been here in 2 years, but if a place is worth it, I’ll most likely remember it. I absolutely love these little hidden cafes. There’s some serenity about them and the fact that they’re unknown makes them even more intriguing. Located right by Sophie’s Crepes and the Kinokuniya Bookstore, you wouldn’t even think this is a café. But it is! Upon entering, you’ll feel as if you’ve entered a tiny doll’s living room. There’s a nice elegance to this place and it’s simplicity made it rather appealing. The menu was very simple. A few sandwiches and savory goods, desserts, and my favorite part of any café menu: coffee. But since it was a warm day in the bay, the iced green tea float definitely caught my eye. Who’d ever think to combine these two together is beyond me. It was a well blended cup of green matcha tea with a single scoop of vanilla ice cream in it. It was definitely exceptional, and the green tea went so well with the vanilla ice cream. Liquid sugar is also optional, but knowing me, I have a sweet tooth the size of the United States. Definitely a place to check out whenever you’re in Japantown and wanting to escape the busy and hectic lifestyle.

Got Iced green tea float. Yum. Vanilla ice cream pretty much did the job on getting it slightly sweet and milky, so I didn’t need to put extra sweetener. I actually came in to charge my phone but I love the pretty dish and the general atmosphere. The owner lady was kind of awkward when I asked asked her if I can charge phone or if I pay before or after ordering beverage; she either is very shy or doesn’t like me. Overall, I was comfortable here :) I wonder why this place always seems rather empty…

It’s hidden next to Sophies Crepes and the bookstore. I had the mint tea and a mixed sandwich. The sandwich was very light and filling, and the tea was served on its own little tray. It is cash only, so be prepared for that.

This is a really cute Japanese tea shop inside of the Japan town mall, right next to the bustling Sophie’s Crepes. Don’t be intimidated with the quietness, just walk in and order a drink. The matcha comes in a more traditional bowl, and is served with anmitsu(red bean paste) with green tea powder. The green tea float is matcha with a scoop of ice cream, with liquid sweetener since the tea is not sweetened to begin with. They also have western-style teas, served in the really cute cups and teapots on top of trays. The whole place just feels delicate. They are very asian-style, not-so-sweet treats, but perfect for me. I also like how quiet it is. It seems like one lady mans the whole place — she takes your order, makes them, cleans up, and gives you your bill. It was quite impressive watching her!
