having lived in Bermondsey for too many years to remember The George has been one of my locals and always a favourite because of the history and character that still remains in this amazing building. It has changed very little over the years though the restaurant upstairs did close for quite a few. BUT this review is about thankinki g a very kind and honest man who handed in my handbag last night after I had left it on one of the tables in the yard. I wanted to thank him for his honesty and for saving me from a very difficult time — no phone, cancelling cards etc. I hope you read this. Thank you very very much. It restores my faith in humanity.

I did thoroughly enjoy my time at The George. It’s the«lad’s pub» inside of the Andaz hotel and, if you’re into the whole«men in slimfit suits» thing, you should park yourself here around 5pm on a weeknight and go to town. If you’re a lad looking for a pint, this is a convenient stop, given that it’s next to the Liverpool Street Station, it’s large inside and the prices aren’t too steep. If you’re a lad looking for a woman, don’t bother coming here. It’s a sausage fest. Pints are reasonably priced and there are large screen tellys everywhere. Would be a great place to catch a Champions League match after work. I love the painting of old Bishopsgate above the bar. The history here is amazing, particularly in this old part of London. The bar sells some nice crisps and the ladies who tend it are very friendly. My husband and I visited The George everyday for at least one pint during our stay at the Andaz. So convenient and a nice way to start and end the evening. Beautiful, a touch classy and historic at that.

The George, a pub on a very busy corner of London, looked like a separate business, but was actually part of the Andaz Hotel complex. It was fairly popular each time I looked in, but not as popular as some of the other pubs I noticed nearby. But at least this meant they had room inside. Not a lot of real ale choices — I saw only one; the rest was Guinness or the various lagers on tap. But they did have hard cider on draft, which was a nice change of pace. They closed early; I stopped by for a nightcap around 9:30 on a weeknight, but the doors were shuttered. Across the street, the White Hart still had a dozen people inside. Nice décor, including a beautiful old bar and Victorian style ceiling. Overall, a decent place to grab a pint, but if felt a bit staged; almost like a pub in Disneyland.

It’s an English pub! Good-oh. not in a bad way, everyone is welcome, I just like to see a George flag in the centre of London sometimes. Everything as is to be expected from a normal English pub

If you’re into stalking City boys, look no further — you’ll have your pick of suited up blokes watching Champions League football matches at the George. This bar, inside the swish Andaz Hotel on Liverpool Street, was absolutely heaving with dudes direct from work when I came Tuesday to watch AC Milan v Tottenham Hotspur. I was one of maybe five women in the entire place. I only drank a couple half pints of Guinness so no comments on the food except to say that the sharing platters looked pretty plentiful and the skewers made me salivate slightly.

The George is the pub of the Andaz Liverpool Street Hyatt hotel and unlike most hotel pubs, it is actually OK as a pub. Not brilliant, but certainly OK. The old victorian Great Eastern Hotel was completed in 1887 the heyday of train travel and it was a truly impressive building, which gradually fell into decay and disrepute. Fortunately, it was saved, renovated by Conran and is now a very impressive hotel with four restaurants and the pub. The interior is very impressive, wood panelled from floor to carved ceiling with a large oil painting of 17th century London behind the bar. It gets the third star for the interior and the phenominal loos. The atmosphere is somehow a little cold, it gets very busy when the cricket is on and the clientele are mostly city workers. It wouldn’t be my first choice of pubs around here, but if you wanted a drink before going on to one of the very nice restaurants in the same building this would be your place.
