I went with my family for a birthday brunch, and it was packed. It’s a very small space, and pretty popular for brunch so I can understand that. However we were a group of 4, and there were two groups of 2 ahead of us and one after us. A table for 4 cleared up, and a group of 2 were seated at it. Another table for 4 cleared up, and another group of 2 were seated. Two tables for 2 were cleared up, one behind the other, and the group of 2 behind us were seated. 20 – 30 minutes after we arrived we were finally seated. They should be a little more strategic in how they seat customers, so people don’t have to wait so long and they save space. However a waiter did come to ask if we’d like drinks while we were waiting. Our food didn’t take long to arrive, and it was delicious! A good portion for a reasonable price. The servers were pretty busy as the place was so packed but they did their best to be efficient. The only thing I think they could improve on is how they seat people. Or else get a bigger location. Don’t come for lunch if you don’t like to wait. But the food was great and the servers did their best :)

It was delicious I had their version of a pancake with sausage, bacon, eggs and hash browns. The place is in a weird little basement but it’s cute and the service was nice and polite. Oh and you have to try the orange juice!

It’s strange that such a popular local chain has a location stuffed in a cramped, dingy basement. If ambiance is something you require, this isn’t the place for you. De Dutch Pennekoek House(every location I’ve been to) is a consistently good choice for a breakfast or lunch, though you may to wait before getting a table. The prices are reasonable, the selection is good, and the food is tasty. The service is generally peppy and quick. FWIW, My family from the Netherlands approves, which is a good sign!

Bad food, bad service and very expensive. They don’t even have a proper kitchen: no stove to poach an egg!

We brought our son out for breakfast and looked for something close to SFU, affordable, and generous with serving sizes. After reading a Unilocal review that this place reminded someone of an illegal IHOP because of the back alley only entrance we couldn’t resist. The atmosphere reminded us of a fun low budget café in Europe. The server was super friendly, attentive, and helpful. Our coffee and water glasses we constantly refilled and our breakfast was served pretty quickly. The Dutch pancake is huge and tastes good. My bratwurst eggs and tomato was good. Although the plate size and pancake were huge, the total serving size was just about right. Breakfast was good and it met our expectations. Would not hesitate to return.

Food was great, service good, location weird. Felt like an illegal pancake house. Underground, access from the alley only.

Came here for Sunday breakfast. It’s a pretty small and cozy restaurant that’s hidden in the back behind Hastings street. There weren’t many people so we just walked in. This was the first time I’ve been to any dutch pancake house. They have a good assortment of various sweet and savory pannekoeken which are the main attraction here. The dutch pancakes are thinner but bigger than traditional pancakes. Not quite as thin as a crêpe though. Then they just heap stuff on top. We weren’t sure how to eat it, but according to the menu the traditional way to eat pannekoeken is to roll them up with the stuff inside then cut it into pieces and eat it. The waitress was pretty courteous and, but was pretty busy most of the time and didn’t check on us much. We ordered a peach melba + whip pannekoeken, meat lovers pannekoeken, the hash pannekoekn, and dutch toast. For the peach melba, there isn’t much peach but tons of whip. Regardless it still tastes pretty great, similar to crepes but more substantial pancake. The sausages in the meat lovers were a bit oily but tasty. The hash had a good mix of meats and vegetables kind of like the fillings you’d get in a omelette, just as delicious inside a pannekoeken. Overall a nice twist on breakfast food with familiar elements wrapped in a pannekoeken.

If there’s one thing that’s consistent at this restaurant, is the consistent friendly service and great food. Every time I come I am greeted with a genuine smile, The décor is cute too, there’s something about the European feel that I can totally appreciate. Keep in mind though, the portions here are huge so if you aren’t coming with a huge appetite? be sure to ask for a smaller portion which they readily offer. Unless of course, you can finish a 12″ pannoek :)

Came here while I was visiting a friend in Burnaby. Small/cozy restaurant, not too busy at 10:30 in the morning. Food took about ten minutes, and it was delicious. I had the larger Farmer’s breakfast, and everything tasted great. Friendly, fast service! It is a bit pricey, but worth it. Definitely would go again.

Holy mother of pancakes! If you are looking for a broad assortment of pancakes with interesting toppings, this is the place for you! The eggs Benedict was mediocre — it came on a hard, crunchy biscuit as opposed to a soft, fluffy English muffin, which made it difficult to eat — and the breakfast potatoes were flavourless. I would not recommend this option. NOTVEGANFRIENDLY

This place needed a new review. We went in early Saturday morning. Not busy. Lousy service from a waitress who was more interested in gossiping with«a regular» than serving. Our food was cold, bennies were bla and they forgot part of our order. We had to get up ourselves to get butter and syrup for our order… Um really? You didn’t think we’d need that? Will not be back!

The pancake was good, basically a big rolled out crêpe, everything else that went along with it was not good. The pancake saved the restaurant from my first one star rating. Besides the pancake, the most flavorful thing I had was the ketchup… The restaurant itself looks bad as well.

The service was good, my omelet was burnt but upon showing the server she quickly rectified the situation with a complete fresh plate of food which was very good and what I expect from a $ 13 dollar omelet! I will return but not in the near future!

I pass this place every single day, or more specifically, I’ve seen the sign every single day. I never actually knew a restaurant existed until I looked it up on Unilocal. One day I braved it and ventured down the dark stairs to realize they had a bustling business going on. My first De Dutch experience was at the Poco one, but now I’m a regular at the Hastings one because the food is just as good, and this place is much cozier AND closer. The service I might dare say is even better, and has a homey, small business feel. Perhaps this is why if you don’t come early, you will have to wait as your hungrily drool over other people’s Pannekoeks. There is a small parking lot in the back but there’s also free parking out front. Food is to die for, although thankfully the prices are steep enough to limit my excessive caloric intake to something like once/month. Sometimes it’s worth it even twice/month depending on your budgetary constraints. You just have to do De Dutch!

First off, getting here was a challenge. The restaurant does not face Hastings, rather you’ve got to go behind the building. On the bright side, this means they’ve got a parking lot! So when you get to the right block, hang a left, another left, and park in front on the restaurant. Moving on, the food was delicious. Not a complaint was uttered around the table. I liked how the entire meals were served atop the pannekoek, leaving this sweet and delicious piece of heaven at the bottom waiting for you, now saturated with the flavors of breakfast. Or your entire breakfast tasted like dessert if you got one of their fruit concoctions. For a breakfast joint I thought $ 70 was a little steep for 4 people but, truthfully, that won’t stop me from coming back.

The pancake was pretty different. I’ve never had real dutch pancakes before. I had a Dutch roommate once who made them by just watering down some Aunt Jemima mix. But these were much different from Aunty J. These pancakes had a saltier taste and in some way, even tasted a bit like a plain dosa. I ordered the Canadian Pannekoek which was a Dutch pancake that came with 2 free range eggs, 2 slices of tomatoes and«deBakon»(pork cottage roll) but I sub-ed the debakon for sausage slices. And it was served with real Canadian Maple syrup. At first I thought the eggs looked a little strange for restaurant eggs but then I realized they looked just like scrambled eggs you’d make at home with your real eggs. And they were tasty. The hot chocolate was overly doused with whipped cream, and the hot chocolate it self was watery Carnation mix, it seemed. So next time I’d skip that. And it’s true that the restaurant was out dated. It’s in a bit of a basement-like suite with little seating room for a diner. But Actually I think all of that added to the quirky ambience to the diner. I’ve never seen a place like it before. It would be nicer with an update, but I don’t mind it like this. However, It would be difficult to come here with a party bigger than 6. The bathrooms are also pretty out dated and could use a major facelift. But they do have the rotating seat covers on the toilet. Lastly, the service was a little slow. We had to flag them down a couple times for coffee refills. But they were pretty busy.

The food is De Licious!(4.5 stars) The restaurant is De sperately needing a restaurant makeover!(2 stars) Another brunch with my girls and we all ordered something different. I ordered the vegetarian pancake with a side of one egg and a side of the hot cinnamony apples. Everything was divine! The pancake perfectly done, my earl grey tea pot refilled without having to wait until my mug hit the bottom, and my over-medium side of egg was done to perfection. On top of that the service was spot on. I wish I could say as much for the restaurant itself. Ok, Ok, aside from the two huge pot holes getting into the parking out back, the restaurant had this peculiar smell when I first entered. I cannot put my finger on the smell, but I do know that it was unappetizing. There were two flies flying around our table — One big one and one smaller one. Luckily I discovered them after I ate my meal, but I spent a good 15 minutes swatting them out of the way as my girlfrends and I finished off our tea and gossip. I feel like if they deep cleaned the entire restaurant(or tore everything out and started from scratch) the atmosphere would be a lot more comfortable to eat in. Though washroom was clean, overall the food is too good for the atmosphere as is.

I LOVETHISPLACE. It’s wayyyyyyy better than the iHop across the street, and the Pannekoeks are amazing!!! Coffee’s yummy and so is the juice. If you’ve never tried a Pannekoek go now!!! It’s like a pancake, but bigger(I would say as big as a car wheel), eggier, fluffy and just yummy! My favorite is the sweet Pannekoek with strawberries, whipped cream and powdered sugar.

Full disclosure: I worked at another De Dutch Pannekoek House location for two years while I was in university. But I ate the food(and drank the coffee) every week when I worked there, and I still love it [mrmmmff] years later. So that’s both my conflict of interest statement and my endorsement! Best things on the menu: the BC Bene’s with smoked salmon and cheese served on crispbread, the Canadian Pannekoek with back bacon and real maple syrup, the Perogy Pannekoek with all the potatoes and cheese baked into it, and the hash browns. Love those crispy little hashbrowns on the side. Like most locations, this one is small and out of the way — you’ll have to go down the alley just north of Hastings to reach the door. And there will likely be a lineup on weekend mornings. I know. I used to deal with it. By the way, when they tell you how long the wait will be, they’re mostly lying. But it’s worth the wait.
