Big Boy is a hole-in-the-wall fish and chip shop that seems like it hasn’t increased their prices in at least a decade($ 2 for hoki and $ 3 for gurnard, how?!). While shopping at the Pyrenees Delicatessen next door I got more than a bit hangry and couldn’t go past the $ 3.30 cheeseburger listed on Big Boy’s menu. I also got a scoop of chips($ 2) and a potato fritter($ 0.80). For 5.30pm on a Thursday they were pretty busy. The cheeseburger is what you would expect from a fish and chip shop, cheap beef patty, cheese, lettuce and tomato. The chips were crinkle cut but needed more salt. The potato fritter was real potato(you know how you get those cardboard tasting ones somtimes) and had chicken salt on it which was tasty. Overall for $ 6 it was good value. I’m keen(and also a little afraid) to go back and try their $ 3 gurnard. I’ve definitely had better takeaways but I don’t think I’ve had cheaper in Auckland. They also do deep fried Mars bars($ 1.50) and donuts($ 0.90).

These guys do an awesome cheeseburger. Super cheap too, you can get a cheeseburger and chips for around $ 5. Like the previous reviewer I also think Fish n Chips is always a bit blah and samey but as one of my neighbourhood takeaways I think they’re worth a mention for the cheeseburger alone. The place is pretty tiny and you pretty much have to wait outside for your takeaways but they are very speedy so it’s not too much of an issue.

The problem with reviewing fish & chips is that there’s not that much to say. You know what fish & chips are like, and you know what to expect. That was my experience of Big Boy. I enjoyed it, but that’s my reaction to most fish & chips. Unless they’re amazing(rare) or give me food poisoning(thankfully also rare) they’re not unique. So: Big Boy specifically. They don’t have anywhere to sit, which is bad, but they do have spacies to play while you wait, which is good. Overall a pleasant, if unsurprising experience. Oh, actually, they do have one point of difference — they’re next to a good park so if the weather permits you can take your food and eat it there, which is nice.
