I struggled with selecting a rating for Y Not. My meal was great, but the dining experience not so much. When I visited with my partner, her friend and one of our work colleagues during White Night in 2015, the wait time for our meals was incredibly long — a little over an hour after ordering. We watched as meals came out for people around us who had arrived before us. We were not given any indication when ordering that our meals would be delayed(I understand that some dishes can take longer to cook than others). We didn’t say anything because we were genuinely curious to see how long it would take until they noticed — due to the event, understandably they were busy, but not so much so that the servers couldn’t update us on the ETA for our meals. I could not pick any fault with my meal once it finally came, but by that point, I was so hungry, I could have eaten anything. The wait time spoilt what was otherwise an enjoyable meal. I could think of a ‘Y Not’ come again reason for sure(very unfortunate business name if you don’t live up to service expectations, you simply become the butt of all jokes). On the plus side, we had two Entertainment Book vouchers, so only had to pay for two of the meals(buy two mains get the cheaper one free), which at least made us feel slightly compensated. Y Not is in a nice location on the western side of Prince Wharf, next to the water(if you get a table and seat on the colonnade).

Terrible food and even worse service. They forgot a beverage and still put it on my bill.

When I’m on business travel, my usual strategy for finding good food is to follow the crowd. Bypassing several vacant waterfront establishments led us here, and we weren’t disappointed. The service was prompt and the seafood was solid. It definitely didn’t blow me away by any means, but if you’re looking for a decent meal then Y Not stop in here?

Y not for lack of a better word has left me asking WHY. Had a very sub par dining experience here a few weekends ago. My primary concern was the deceptive set menu, which stated that all $ 35 meals start with an entrée of breads and dips. In our table of 19 people we had 4 maybe 5 plates of bread and dip to share which roughly equated to one sliver each. Needless to say we were extremely hungry by the time mains arrived, only to be shocked at the quality. I had the steak which was not only relatively cold, but had giant lumps of unrendered fat all through it, such that it was largely unappetising even to look at, no less to eat. Commanding a premium price tag means a certain expectation of quality, and I definitely did not experience that here. Extremely underwhelmed.

Popped in for an impromptu lunch. We’ve had dinners here before, and quite enjoyed it. We started with the antipasto platter to share, which was lovely, then on to one of today’s specials, Land and Sea. This is steak, with prawn and scallop, creamy garlic mushroom sauce, and fries or potatoes. Hubby ordered medium-rare, I(being less trusting) ordered rare. So many times, I’ve ordered rare and gotten medium at best. But not here! Both steaks perfectly cooked! The dish could’ve done with some green veggies, but for a lunch dish, it was perfect. In fact, I’ve foregone dinner tonight, I’m still not hungry. The 4 stars is because they have one of those annoying eftpos machines that try to guilt you into leaving a tip — let’s be frank here, we are not a tipping nation, and a half hour lunch sitting is nowhere near enough for me to have received service that I would tip for. We pay well enough to deserve polite, attentive wait staff, and I don’t like having to deal with a mechanical guilt-trip! Ditch the eftpos machine(maybe for one with paypass instead of guilt-trip), and you’d earn five stars from me!
