Gmoa Keller

Came here with my family for our first dinner in Vienna. It was quite busy and we hadn’t made a reservation but were able to get seats within a few minutes. My mom got a mushroom goulash, my brother the schnitzel, me the veal special, and my dad a mushroom ravioli. We all really liked our dishes. I also got a local beer which was one of my favorite ones I tried on our Eastern European tour. The waiter was very friendly and even made jokes with us when we asked about the mushroom which had a name we had never heard of.

Fantastic traditional Viennese pub restaurant.
It’s kind of in a basement, the tables are set in a large high vaulted hall with very little space to move about, it’s noisy, and the air indoors is usually soaked by the scents and smells of the business. There are tables outdoors in summer though.
Either way it’s worth it. Despite the hubbub, the service is efficient and helpful, the food delicious, drinks without fault. (They have their own beer and a good selection of nice local wines.)
One of my favourites were the kidneys in pepper sauce. They have a while ago changed the way they cut and present them, which is not quite as perfect as before but they are still gorgeous. Best kidneys ever, and the sauce is to die for.
Note that it’s right opposite the Konzerthaus, so a lot of people go there post-​concert, i.e., you really, really need to reserve a table around these times.

When in Vienna, I did a quick Unilocal search to find somewhere nearby my hotel to grab some dinner after a long day of traveling. Gmoa Keller popped up, so my friend and I headed there. From the outside, it looked like a cute little local tavern. It’s tucked under a street, so you go down stairs to enter the restaurant.
Walking in, we assumed it was a local bar. It was charming and decorated in all wood. But when we turned the corner and saw the actual seating area, we realized it was much more fancy of a place than we had imagined. 90% of the people seated were wearing dinner jackets and fancy evening clothes. We were dressed in jeans and t-​shirts and quickly realized we were probably way under dressed. We were seated anyways. About 10 minutes into dinner, two elderly woman came in with a dog and were seated next to us … we couldn’t figure this place out.
Dinner was pretty delicious — I had the goulash (not at all what I expected from my American version of goulash) and my friend had the Wuerstel. The goulash was so hearty and rich — full of big chunks of meat stew poured over white rice. I loved it.
The place itself was cute and charming — there is a lot of history associated with the building and what it was before the restaurant. Ask your waiter for the full story.
The bill was pretty cheap — probably around $ 15/​piece USD?

Excellent food for a reasonable price, great vibe and service. Had the Vogerlsalat and Debreziner Wuerstel, both were fantastic.

Gmoakeller ist suuuupergut! Wir waren im Urlaub hier zum Sylvesteressen und waren begeistert! Hier gab es trotz Sylvesteressen tollen Service und sehr schmackhaftes Essen — viele davon hausgemachte Spezialitäten. Die Tische waren zwecks des Anlasses entsprechend gedeckt ohne es dabei zu übertreiben. Das Essen war preislich total in Ordnung und die Portionen gut.

Eine tolle Mischung aus klassischer, österreichischer Küche und Gasthaus Ambiente (im positiven Sinn).

Great food good price. Make reservations beforehand, it is normally packed with locals. Had a great evening here. The pork schnitzel was great and less than 11 € and bigger than my head, great value compared to a lot of restaurants I have gone to in Vienna. We tried to go before but then made reservations to go later in the week. They speak English on the phone for reservations and have an English menu.

Absolutely lived up to the reviews! A very pleasant local dining experience!
Our waiter was very friendly. There was a slight mix up in the order, (probably due to my poor pronunciation of tafelspitzsulz: they brought tafelspitz instead) and the server who brought it was a bit gruff at first when i told him that’s not what we ordered, but the meal was pleasant once the confusion was cleared up.
(There is an english menu. It looks like they udated it to include all items since earlier reviews to the contrary)
The atmosphere was lively with many locals and locals who stopped by for an after opera dinner/​drink.
We had the:
–tafelspitz sulz (a boiled beef aspic, don’t let this poor translation turn you off. It’s awesome!)
–gulash — the meet was so~~~tender and juicy
–rindsuppe mit fleishstrudel (beef broth with meat strudel) — also very tasty
–3 glaases of wine
Total 55 euro after a 12% tip.

Food is of great quality, waiters are nice. Well priced. Just don’t have dessert.

Really rude and bad services here. Staffs giving attitude when we tried to speak in English and they misunderstood us. Food are above average, their food are really salty.

This place had a good rating for a reason. The service was great. They sat us down even though we didn’t have a reservation. They provided us with good recommendations and all were hits. Pumpkin soup was fantastic! There were no pressures to leave (even though there was a reservation for our table). Highly recommended.

We felt right at home in this homey Austrian restaurant. Fancy enough for a night out without breaking the bank. The food was as good as we had in Austria.
The staff helped us out with suggestions for later in the night. A waiter from another table even went so far as to lend us his phone as a Wifi hotspot so we could get directions. Top notch.

Beste tartar steak, die Kellnern sind sehr freundlich Resevierungen immer erfolgreich.

Bester Zwiebelrostbraten der Stadt. In diesem von der Einrichtung bis zum Essen typischen Wiener Gasthaus ist man gut aufgehoben. Häufig auch in Gesellschaft von heimischer (politischer) Prominenz.

Good food, but it would be much better if I could have read the full menu. They do have one page translated to English, but I suspect the really authentic options are only on the German menu.

This restaurant was recommended to us by our AirBNB owner and boy was it a great recommendation! The server was knowledgable about both the food and the wine — excellent recommendations and he didn’t try to upsell us on the wine prices. While they did have an English menu, our waiter was very patient and proficient in explaining additional dishes and ingredients in English.
The food was terrific. We tried two soups and both were incredible. We had a steak and the wiener schnitzel with an awesome cranberry dipping sauce that lightened it up.
Great atmosphere. There is an upstairs and a downstairs and we ate downstairs which has a white brick arched ceiling. Very wine cave feeling. Tasteful modern décor. It’s off the beaten tourist path, but only a 10 minute walk from the heart of the city.

This was my favorite restaurant of my 2 week trip to Europe. Authentic Austrian food. We were the only English speaking guests there!

Delicious food with friendly personnel. I suggest booking a table beforehand. It’s busy especially at weekends.

Mein letzter Wienbesuch war im Dezember 2014. Durch Zufall sind wir bei einem Fußmarsch in Richtung Innenstadt am Gmoa Keller vorbeigekommen. Die Karte wirkte sehr ansprechend und somit beschlossen wir einen Besuch zum Abendessen. Das Lokal ist bei den Wienern sehr beliebt, somit hatten wir Glück auch ohne Reservierung noch einen Tisch zu bekommen. Der Kellner meinte zwar: 40 Minuten, dann brauch ich den Platz wieder… aber nach dem unsere Gegenfrage war: wir schon, aber Eure Küche ?! :) wurden wir schnell zum Tisch geführt. Das Wiener Schnitzel war bzw. ist ein Highlight des Urlaub’s gewesen — super Panade, traumhafter Erdäpfelsalat…ich schwärme heute noch davon.
Schneller Service, super Essen, faire Preise und beim verlassen des Restaurants noch ein Rapid Trikot mit Unterschriften gesichtet… da komme ich 100% wieder !!!

Schönes Restaurant mit den klassischen Gerichten der Österreicher.
Nach langem suchen hatten wir uns heute für dieses nette Restaurant entschieden und wurden nicht enttäuscht.
Super nettes Personal was einem jeden Wunsch erfüllt.
Das Essen wurde schnell an den Tisch serviert und es wurde ebenso schnell von uns verputzt.
Erstklassige Küche die wir jedem empfehlen können.
Die Preise sind vollkommen Unordnung und die Qualität der speisen ist Top.
Gulasch und Schnitzel waren ein Traum und würde jederzeit wiederkommen.

Fantastisches urwiener Restaurant. Ein Lokal, dass ich jedem Tourist empfehlen möchte, der eine Zeitreise machen möchte. Die Kellner sind zuvorkommend und mit den wienerischen Kellneroutfit, das Essen ist sehr lecker und auch echt wienerisch. Die Ausstattung ist zwar ganz nett, dass sie noch so alt und passend für das Restaurant ist, aber das könnte doch ein klein bisschen Moderne vertragen, ist aber natürlich geschmackssache.

Classically decorated with white tablecloths and lowly light candles, the interior of GmoaKeller was tasteful, simple, traditional and high class. We were presented with a large menu but the English menu was limited, so we did something daring — letting the server recommend everything we had that night from the German menu. He recommended some light sweet beer that tasted a lot like cider that came in small mugs, along with deep fried mushrooms for starters. It was fantastic and simple. My boyfriend received the veal schnitzel which was light and tender, not to mention massive, and I got the trout which was seared, stuffed with mushroom, celery, peppers, and lightly fried potatoes, with pesto aioli on the side. It was honestly the best fish I’ve ever had in my life; the combination of flavored were truly exquisite.
We would absolute put this place on the top 3 best restaurants in Vienna for good Austrian food.
Prices were extremely affordable as well. 3 beers and 3 entrees were 60 – 70 euros.

Rustikales Ambiente. Sehr netter zuvorkommender Service auch bei hohem Gästeaufkommen. Preise günstig.
Essen gut bürgerlich, top, schmackhaft.
Fazit: Wiederholungswürdig

Das Service ist großartig — hat in der Sekunde schon den Wunsch erkannt
und notiert ihn gleich — mit gezählten zwölf Tellern, in der linken Hand.
Mit Liebe zum Detail geht es hier zu Werke,
was ich als Ex-​Kellner jedes Mal bemerke.
Eines geb’ ich noch mit, weil’s gesagt werden muss
(und dann komm ich auch vorerst wieder zum Schluss):
Mit einem Lächeln verlassen die Gäste dieses Lokal,
und kommen — auch wegen der guten Küche — bald das nächste Mal.

War zum ersten Mal aufgrund der Berichte im Gmoa Keller und kann die positiven Berichte nur bestätigen! Der Zwiebelrostbraten war sehr gut und das tschechische Bier süffig! Preis/​Leistung ist top. Nur der Kellner war etwas langsam.
Gemütliche Atmosphäre in einem gepflegten Beisl!

Der Gmoa Keller ist mehr als nur ein gutes Beisl. Zwar wird zum einen traditionelle heimische Küche in guter Qualität gereicht, zum anderen bietet die Tageskarte einige Schmankerl, die eindeutig über das Niveau der klassischen Beislküche hinaus gehen.
Der Gmoa Keller ist ein uriges Restaurant, das den Spagat zwischen Tradition und Moderne gut hin bekommt. Im Erdgeschoss herrscht klassische Wirtshausatmosphäre, im Kellerbereich finden sich entgegen meiner Erwartung keine Bierbänke, sondern eingedeckte Tische. Hier ist der Gmoakeller eher Restaurant als Beisl. Nun zum Essen: Auf der Standardkarte findet sich traditionelle regionale Küche, während die Tageskarte durchaus brillieren kann. Leider habe ich mich aufgrund der Lobpreisungen des Cordon Bleus in anderen Beiträgen für dieses entschieden. Es war gut, aber sicher nicht das beste, das ich jemals gegessen habe, das hatte ich beim Heidinger im 15.. Mit etwas Neid habe ich da auf den Teller der Tischnachbarin geschaut. Osterbeinschinken auf Erdäpfel– und Bärlauchpürree. Allein optisch ein Highlight. Der Service war trotz des großen Andrangs professionell und freundlich, wenn auch die letzte Herzlichkeit vielleicht gefehlt hat. Aber alle Achtung für das Programm, das das Personal dort stemmen kann.
Preislich liegt der Gmoa-​Keller durchaus noch im akzeptablen Bereich. Den fünften Stern halte ich für einen künftigen Besuch zurück. dann gibt es sicher etwas von der Tageskarte.

Judging by the name alone, I was expecting a seedy Beisl-​type place with smoke-​filled rooms and grumpy waiters. Quite the opposite was the case! No smoke. No bad service. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive and happy to accomodate any order. Food was delicious and fast! I had a fish dish which was served in a very appealing way — nicer than I have seen in some other expensive restaurants. Prices are fair and the ambience downstairs is comfy.
I’m deducting a star because it was a bit hard to find and there is no cell phone reception downstairs. Also the upstairs area is not very welcoming. But other than that I was positively surprised by this place. I definitely recommend going there if you want Austrian cuisine with a modern twist!

Really enjoyed the atmosphere at Gmoa Keller. It is a historical hotel with a nice feel to it and great food. The location is great, whether you are in the center of town or just outside to the east. From it’s location I can imagine the terrace would also be great in the summertime.
For the meal I had to try schnitzel since it had been a while for me. I can say that I’ve had better schnitzel before but this one was quite good. Their potato salad is typical with this meal and tasted good itself. Along with it we had some house wine which was also good. After the wine I switched back to beer which was also house made I believe they said and had a slightly bitter flavor.
The service was there with a smile and both servers we had were helpful with the menu. Their English was also good along with the menu being in English which helped us tourists :)
Will go back I’m sure when I’m in Vienna again.

Excellent Austrian food with good service to boot at a reasonable price.
I wandered in on a Friday evening, after a table for one on the back of a Unilocal recommendation. Greeted instantly and found a table not long thereafter.
A little delayed in getting a menu (note the English menu is less comprehensive than the German) but it and a Pils soon followed.
Somewhat lacking in imagination I had a terrible to start followed by the schnitzel (when in Rome etc.) which was the size of a small child. Delicious with the potato salad and cranberries, it took some effort not to devour the whole thing…

Ich war Abends auf ein schnelles Abendessen im Keller. Das Wirthaus war richtig voll. Aber da ich alleine war, fand ich im Keller noch Platz an einem Tisch.
Ein Zwiebelrostbraten mit leckeren Zwiebeln, das Fleich leicht rosa gebraten, leckere Sosse.
Dazu ein Zwickl, passt.
Ich kann nichts kritisieren, sondern: wiederkommen.

Gmoa Keller was such a random Unilocal find, that I’m glad we stayed where we did, in an Airbnb apartment close to the restaurant — because of which Unilocal pointed us to the fabulous first dinner that we had in Vienna.
Superb Tafelspitzsulz mit Kernoel und Zwiebeln, and the delicious Gulasch that I got, were just right, and enough to hit the spot after a long flight from London.
The service is very friendly and quick, and the waiters are happy to walk you through the menu in English, especially the part of the menu which is missing in English (the English menu is slightly abridged).
The feel of the restaurant is very period and vintage, and that makes for a great eat in your evening out in Vienna.

Uriges Wiener Beisl mit guter Bier und weinauswahl und böhmisch angehauchter Küche — wer Wiener Schnitzel — sowohl kalb als auch Schwein– mag, kommt hier voll auf seine Kosten

Wauw, that was really good! I had a sort of vegetarian schnitzel, which was 3 potato and cheese slices and a beautiful spinache saus on the bottom. It was really lovely! And very affordable.
The ony reason I do not give the fifth star, is because the waiters were very distant and merely wanted to get the orders and serve the dishes. Not really friendly. Not that they were unfriendly per se.
This place knows quite a history, which is really cool. And the food looks and tastes really good as well as it is very affordable. We paid € 26 for the bill. Two main dishes and two drinks. I’m satisfied and really recommend this place!

Mmmmmhhh was für ein Cordon Bleu! Meine Leute sind ja zum Apfelstrudeltesten hergekommen. Aber zu meinem Glück waren sie nicht allein, und einer ihrer netten jungen Begleiter hat offensichtlich einen ähnlichen Geschmack wie ich, und Cordon Bleu bestellt. Ich brauch wohl nicht zu erwähnen, wer mein bester Freund am Tisch war — und erst als ich kosten durfte! Ungeahnte Freuden, Leute, das könnt ihr mir glauben! Den Titel des besten Schnitzels hab ich ja schon woanders vergeben, aber das beste Cordon Bleu findet ihr hier — mit exklusiver Empfehlung von Eurem Unilocalhund!
Auch die sonstige Hundefreundlichkeit ist sehr hoch: Es gibt eine Wasserschüssel für Hunde, und der sehr freundliche Kellner hat sich sogar entschuldigt, mich nicht gleich gesehen zu haben (ich verschwinde immer sofort unterm Tisch, man will ja nicht zur vierbeinigen Stolperfalle werden) und frisches Wasser gebracht, obwohl noch welches drin war. Super Service! Lautstärke ist ebenfalls angenehm, die Geruchskulisse positiv-​unaufdringlich.
Auch die generelle Stimmung im Lokal war gut — offensichtlich ist der Service nicht nur für Hunde 1a, und die Kundenzufriedenheit entsprechend groß!

Kozel vom Fass, Wiener Küche und geniale urige Atmosphäre.
Für ein Beisl gibts eindeutig 5 Sterne. Ich war sowohl vom Ambiente als auch von der Qualität des Essens und der Bedienung absolut überzeugt.
Der Tafelspitz war sehr gut, dazu ein Wiener G’mischter Satz, was will man mehr?

Ein nettes, gehobenes Beisl mit feiner Aufmachung, einer gschmackigen Speisekarte und einer schönen Weinkarte mit vielen österreichischen Leckereien.
Aufmerksame Kellner, die gekonnt mit einer chaotischen Truppe wie unserer umgehen können (manche wollen nur Suppe, andere nur Nachspeise, wieder andere essen zwei Hauptspeisen ;-)).
Ich hatte die Blunznstrudel mit Grammelpesto. Also wenn man Blunzn gern mag — ein Muss!!! In der Strudel war noch Kraut drin, das die ganze Sache leicht erfrischte, und Kren für die gewisse Schärfe. Das Grammelpesto war mit Paprikastückchen durchspickt — schmeckte sehr leicht und frisch!
Also ich freu mich schon auf den nächsten Besuch! Wenn’s wärmer ist, kann ich mir den Schanigarten vorm Lokal auch ganz nett vorstellen…

Es hat zehn Jahre gedauert, bis ich endlich wieder zurückgekommen bin in den Gmoa Keller, in dem ich einmal in meiner Studentenzeit war und mich gleich in ihn verliebt habe. Hier passt alles: das Personal ist extrem freundlich, man wird vom Besitzer per Handschlag begrüßt, die Atmosphäre ist gehobene Beislstimmung inklusive österreichischer Promis. Nun zum Essen: das Cordon Bleu war das beste das ich je hatte. Der Kellner hat außerdem anstandslos und ohne Aufpreis meinen Salataustauschwunsch erfüllt, weiterer Pluspunkt. Die Preise sind eigentlich zu billig für die Qualität und das Ambiente.
Fazit: großartig. Eins meiner Lieblingsbeisl in Wien.

Der Laden ist immer gut besucht reservieren.
Ein Besuch lohnt sich auf jeden Fall. Vegetarier werden hier aber leider nicht so glücklich.
