I was having the worst day. These guys are amazing! I got really lost, and ended up all the way down in Lambeth, I stopped in for a pint, stayed for a few and food. The service was great, the bar tenders humored me and emphasized with my silly mistake. The food was top notch also the atmosphere and drink. The bar tenders called me a cab and I made it back where I belong safe and sound!

This has been my local for years and I have a bit of a love hate relationship with it. In summer when the sun is shining its outdoor tables are a wonderful place to drink, in the winter when its not to packed its a chilled place for a pint — but it still lacks a little bit of cosiness and the food is always a bit hit and miss.

good for many reasons, comfy drinking here when on my own and there’s always a friendly person nearby. Have enjoyed many good party nights here organised by the Manager, who makes everyone feel involved. See you when I’m next in town!

This pub should be alright judging from its location and initial impression. Unfortunately, it’s horribly managed. Went there twice. Thought I’d give them a second chance when I went the second. time. Manager is a horribly rude man and makes me never want to go back again. I’ll spend my money somewhere else, thank you very much. There are enough pubs in Kennington that are so much better!

Could try harder. This place should be so much better. Located right in the heart of Kennington, with the added benefit of having loads of outside seating, perfect on a sunny day or balmy evening, watching the often entertaining locals meander by. It’s on the right side of shabby chic, with a large bar downstairs with seating, and a smaller function room upstairs. However, the truth is it somehow never quite gets it right. The main complaint I have is that even when it’s quiet the staff seem to work at their own pace and it takes way too long to get served. The ales are often questionable and the food is a gamble. Now that all the surrounding pubs have recently upped their game(Black Prince, Tommyfield etc), isn’t it time The Dog House did too. Top marks for the name though!

Fails to live up to its potential. Australian manager lacks charisma and only seems to recognise alcoholic locals who always take precedence when waiting to be served. The pub interior feels very dirty and one wonders when it last given a proper clean hence food is not really recommended. The beer is a little over-priced and the staff seem to be made up largely of unfriendly oddballs, not the confident smiling, straightforward people you’d rather face after a hard day’s work. People say this is place is unpretentious but I think that term better describes people and places that don’t aim very high and have a pedestrian attitude to excellence. On the whole, The Dog House rather sums up Kennington: A rather dull place, easily accessible but lacking in real character that is neither here nor there.

went here for a lunch after we discovered the tommyfield wasn’t serving(sad) but had a pretty enjoyable meal. the pub is pretty dark and dank overall so not the classiest of establishments, but the food surprised. i had the steak and chips which was HUGE and deliciously chargrilled. came with a side of pepper sauce and chips. for pub food, i would put this way above the bar. for a good meal out, i would put it at the bar — or the pub in this instance.

Have just waited an hour for a bowl of chips. Staff generally rude. Go to the tommyfield for a drink instead

This is the solid, summertime, good-if-uninspired food pub. Probably just shy of four stars, but they have Black Sheep Bitter on tap and they served me half a roast chicken when I was starving, although it did come with about three cherry tomatoes. Which I was particularly looking forward to. Enormous amounts of outdoor seating, decent ale prices for SW1, on the main road, but off the beaten track. And the poor pink-haired bar girl was just… lost, in a really funky way. I hope it was a good night dear. Well-kept and not tatty. A place for a Skiving Sunny Wednesday afternoon. And a book.

This is perfect place for a Saturday 1ish. Either ‘have not yet made it to bed and need to get solids into me’ or ‘I am hung over and I want a moch-a-rita.(tequila and bitter lemon) This place is perfect for those of us who can not be bothered with fixing our hair or changing out of our Friday night glad rags. Nobody cares and your probably sitting next to a homeless person that smells worse than you. Never busy Saturday at one, great outdoor seating and the The Burgers and fat chips are great!!! You will find us there most Saturdays!!! admit — we have never been there any other time.

The place has history and it shows. I like the neighbourhood feel of the interior, but it is also a little too run down for my taste. Free wifi is a definitely plus, but if you’re looking for something nicer, check out White Hart across the street or the Grand Union down the street.

It feels strange to review a pub that I haven’t actually been into. but as it wasn’t my round, there are a mass of tables outside and it was a lovely spring afternoonI just kicked back in the shade. So what do I know about the pub? Well I know they do live music upstairs because I could hear it, I know they do Sunday lunch because I could smell it(quite goodso I hear) and I know they do at least 1 real ale, because I could taste it. Who needs to go inside to actually see the place when I have so many other senses working for me? If you’ve read any of my reviews before then you will know sometimes when I am undecided between ratings I use the Stella system to help me choose. Apparently this pub makes a special point of the fact that it does not serve the ghastly fluid and for that wonderful news I lean towards 4 stars

I often choose the Dog House for a relaxed Friday/Saturday night with friends when we fancy having a chat in a lively unpretentious atmosphere with the possibility of a dance later on. It delivers on all counts and attracts a really mixed crowd — old locals and students, but rarely tourists, who are unlikely to have Kennington on their list of places to see. It has two areas downstairs and another upstairs where there is sometimes a dj. A friend of mine always has his birthday here as it suits everyone and if you get there early on, you’re more than likely get a good table and enough seats. At weekends it can get really busy, but equally i’ve been there on a Friday and had no problem finding a table — like the people it attracts, the amount of them varies too. This is a great«proper» London pub and a safe bet for any occasion — be it a quiet drink or a night of dancing.

The Dog House is one of those pubs that no matter what day or time you go in, you will always have a great time — even if it is quiet, simply because of the atmosphere and people. It isn’t the sort of place you go to ‘be seen’ which makes it so ironic that the crowd who come here are too cool for skool but are a lovely bunch with it. In fact, you will see all manner of young people in here — a few quirky and fun characters to say the least! It probably isn’t the most sophisticated or elegant pub décor wise — shabby chic may be giving it a little too much credit but surely the purpose of a god pub is the atmosphere, alcohol and people? The Dog House may indeed be a little worse for wear in appearance but it has the best of everything else.

Great boozer! This has got to be one of the best kept secrets in London. Fittingly located in an unpretentious part of town and frequented by locals, young hipsters and oldballs. This is all a london pub should be — effortlessly cool, warm, friendly with affordable beer and food. The atmosphere is ‘never too full — never too empty’. Having said that it’s usually heaving on weekends. Whatever the occasion you can have fun here. It may not be to everyone’s taste in terms of décor — a little rundown — but it more than makes up with it with the people and bar staff(young and good-looking for the most part).

This pub offers good food at a reasonable price. The atmosphere is non-pretencious. The staff are friendly and helpful. Private area for hire upstairs. Evening activities such as live music and tapestry nights! Toilets could use updating!

This pub is always lively and is a good place to drink in the area. The tables outside mean that you can sit and watch the world go by, even if the view isn’t the prettiest. The food menu looks good, although when I went there to eat the meal was fairly debatable.
