Cafe Central

Das Café Central lebt — ganz klar — von der Location und dem Tourismus. Laufkundschaft ist das, was man in dem Lokal findet. Wuselige Touristen überall. Die Kellner sind darauf trainiert, professionell und schnell die Tourist anzufertigen. Mit Charme, Verweilen, Genießen und Flair hat das nichts zutun.
Wir fühlten uns (zu zweit) an einem Katzenplatz im Gang falsch platziert. Wechselten einfach auf einen ruhigeren Platz. Dieser Wechsel wurde uns vom Kellner nicht gestattet. Also ging es zurück zum Katzenplatz. Wenig später wurde dann ein älteres Ehepaar auf dem besseren Platz gesetzt. … Ätzend!
Die Sachertorte hat mit dem Original übrigens nichts zutun, ist ein industrielles Fertigprodukt und eine echte Frechheit für 4,50 Euro.
Mein Tipp: Lasst den Laden links liegen. Das ist Touri-​Nepp vom Feinsten, und schon wenn ihr bestellt habt, fühlt ihr euch abgezockt. Geht lieber in ein kleineres und unbedeutend aussehendes Lokal etwas weiter Stadtauswärts. Dort stimmen nicht nur die Preise, sondern auch das Flair.
1 Stern gibt’s für die Location.

Frühstucken in Wien mit Kinder ist immer schwierig, wir müssen richtige Platz finden, wo nicht nur den Service kinderfreundlich ist, aber auch dass andere Gäste nicht viel beschwerden. Café Central bietet den beste Flair, für gemütliche frühstucken mit Familie (mit kleinen Kinder) auch mit gutes gesundes Essen! Wenn ich mit Freundinnen komme, trinken wir eigentlich und lange plaudern & sitzen. Aber wenn es Familienzeit ist, essen wir im Rühe, weil Service auch einbisschen «langsam» ist. das ist aber gut, so wir können wirklich Zeit nehmen, brauchen nicht beeilen. Am besten mit Reservierung kommen aber OHNE Reservierung klappt auch sehr gut in der Früh!

Eines meiner Lieblings-​Kaffeehäuser in Wien. Ambiente toll, die Patisserie ein Traum, das warme Essen habe ich noch nie probiert aber klingt auf der Karte lecker und was man im Augenwinkel beim Servieren an den Nebentischen so sieht last einem auch das Wasser im Mund zusammenlaufen. Komme immer wieder gerne hier her.

Nach dem alljährlichen Besuch des Christkindelmarktes, war unsere frühere Familientradition immer die anschließende heiße Schokolade im Café Central. Die stimmungsvolle Atmosphäre im Innenraum, eine Mischung aus Kathedrale und Hotel-​Lobby, lädt zum längeren Verweilen ein. Die Bedienung ist durchweg freundlich und höflich, aber auch ein bisschen steif — so wie es sich halt für ein echtes Wiener Kaffeehaus gehört ;-)! Die heiße Schokolade ist ohne Übertreibung die beste Wiens, auch die verschiedenen geschmackvoll hergerichteten Mehlspeisen sind wahre Gaumenfreuden. Dass hier der eine oder andere Euro mehr als woanders investiert werden muss, ist durchaus verschmerzbar. Top!

Da geht man nach Wien und denkt sich, woah, ja, da schau ich mir ein Kaffeehaus an. Aber leider wird man im Café Central scher enttäuscht. Das Ambiente ist zugegeben so wie man es sich vorstellt. Sehr gross, hohe Decke, Art-​Deco… nett. Die luftige Atmosphäre ist allerdings nicht jedermanns Geschmack, ich fand es zu groß und zu luftig.
Was mich dann wirklich enttäuscht hat war der Kaffee und in unserem Fall die Croissants. Der Kaffee war… naja. Ein Kaffee mit Milch eben. Irgendwie hab ich mir da mehr erwartet. So etwas bekomme ich überall, dazu muss ich nicht ins Central.
Und dann das Croissant… ein Butter-​Croissant. OK. Verstehe ich ja. Aber das muss doch bitte nicht heissen dass das Croissant vor Fett trieft. Und soviel Butter enthält, dass man davon Sodbrennen bekommt.
Nein, also da muss das Central dran arbeiten, bei der Qualität hebt es sich nur noch durchs Ambiente aus der Masse heraus. Ob das reicht?

Lieu magnifique mais attention à la queue à l’entrée car victime de son succès ! Grand choix de pâtisseries typiques et déclinaison de chocolats chauds et cafés de toutes sortes. Tarifs assez élevés mais ce n’est pas étonnant vue la renommée de l’établissement. A découvrir !

Went here on a January morning. Almost no tourists, and no line too! Most people who were there were locals discussing business.
It still has the reputation of being touristy, but it is fine because of its historic and cultural value. Good museums are full of tourists (Kunsthistorisches, Louvre, Smithsonian), but you’d still go to one, right? This café was opened in 1876 and was frequented by the likes of Hitler, Tito, Lenin, and Trotsky (who was a regular here). There are two large portraits of Franz Josef and Sisi. The fin-​de-​siecle style architecture is marvelous.
Coffee is pretty good, nothing special, and they have a range of little cakes.

Si eres amante del café, de los postres y estás en Viena no sé qué esperas para visitar esta clásica cafetería, resulta que era el Café que visitaba el famoso Sigmund Freud… bueno, a mí que estudié Psicología eso me pudo encantar, pero no solo eso, es hermoso por dentro, tiene unos candelabros muy vistosos, unos postres deliciosos y un café con sabor a historia, vente a dar la vuelta y mientras tomas un café relájate escuchando a un pianista, sí, a un pianista dentro del lindo Café central.
Además aprovecha y llévate de recuerdo alguna bolsa de café para compartir con tu persona favorita en una coqueta bolsa de un Café con mucha historia.

Really a nice place, yes it’s pricy, but all places that have this kind of beautiful interior are. This is café culture at it’s best. The coffee was good and the desert that I had was as well (huge, it filled me up when all I was looking for was a nice snack). The main thing here is to sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery and the other people there.

We’d spent the morning exploring the museums and Inner City district of Vienna and needed a break. Café Central was thankfully the closest place we had bookmarked when we felt it was time to rest our legs and recharge.
Seated promptly at a cozy corner table near a window, we were given a moment by the server to really take in the almost cathedral style architecture of the café. Marble pillars and arched ceilings and a creative table layout configuration helped to really feel how open, inviting and relaxed the environment was. It may have also influenced a certain level of reverence among the patrons, no one raising their voice trying to speak over the table next to them. It was a very calm setting.
We decided on a pot of tea, with an americano for myself. I ordered the apple strudel which was quite good, although maybe a little too sweet with not enough cinnamon. My wife had a chocolate cake a la mode that was delicious but rich for her tastes. Unfortunately we’d missed the breakfast hours, so couldn’t try any of the sweet items from that menu.
I wouldn’t say anything was mindblowingly delicious, but it was a great experience and the prices were reasonable. Even after a line out the door had developed, we weren’t rushed out at all. I love that about European cafes :)

I don’t know why the café was really desolate when I went. They always deserve tons of customers. Ambiance is relaxing. Right around Innere Stadt’s main streets. Massive Chandelier at the center. Bar revolving platform. Inviting wonderfully crafted details of the café bar. Their sweet coffee drinks is tasty. Hopefully, they improve other menu options. However, they have enough variety, and world class ambiance.

Fortunate extra good luck to obtain more business. I bet they gets tons of business other times outside of lunch everyday. They have wifi without a doubt. Redeeming qualities and deserving of enough attention.

Because it’s a typical tourist attraction place, the service is not the best :(The staff do not really like questions or giving any attention at all actually (took forever to ask for dessert and a check).
The food was good — recommend the soup (any of them, really) and desserts especially! The wiener sausage was not out of the ordinary…

Das Ambiente in diesem Café ist einzigartig. Es tummeln sich viele Touristen hier, um die klassischen Ober (Kellner) und das Interieur des Cafés zu sehen. Dennoch kann man vorallem bei Regenwetter hier einen leckeren, überteuerten Apfelstrudel genießen.

Café Central is in my top of most beautiful cafes I’ve ever visited. I went there in the middle of the winter while visiting a friend and it was the perfect winter location to warm myself. The hot chocolate was delicious and the pastry was divine!
It’s a well-​known place so chances are that you have to wait a while to get a table. If patience really isn’t your virtue, just go inside and look at the gorgeous interior. But I’m telling you: you’re possibly missing out on the sweetest treat of Vienna!

Das Café Central ist mein absolutes Lieblings-​Kaffeehaus, seit vielen Jahren. Hier zeige ich Wien-​Besuchern, wie schön es bei uns ist, hier schreibe ich manchmal Texte (mit Mélange und Buttersemmerl), hier führen die Journalisten vom Standard um 10h morgens so manches Interview.
Was ich am Central mag: Die perfektionierte, aber trotzdem herzliche Höflichkeit der Kellner, die fluffige Eierspeise, die weichen Semmerln, den grandiosen Kaiserschmarrn und: Den Moment, wo der Kellner schwungvoll das gestärkte Café-​Central-​Platzdeckchen ausbreitet. Schön ist auch ein Wein-​Date am Abend. Dann ist weniger los, und der Wein ist günstiger als erwartet! Manchmal spielt der Haus-​Pianist Klavier.
Leider wird es in den letzten Jahren immer voller, zur Weihnachtszeit werden z.B. gar keine Reservierungen mehr entgegengenommen. Touris fotografieren die Kuchentheke. Trotzdem: Immer noch mein Liebling!

Café Central is one of the most popular cafes in Vienna, aside from Café Mozart. There’s almost certainly going to be a wait during prime afternoon coffee hours, but things move quickly; I’ve never waiting more than 5 – 6 minutes.
They’ve got the full array of Viennese sweets on offer, including an amazingly good chocolate cake with ice cream — «Mohr im Hemd mit Vanilleeis» — for less than 7 euros.
The coffee is a lukewarm ho-​hum, but it’ll serve to deliver the caffeine.

Worst experience in Vienna!
We ordered a cappuccino, scramble eggs and an apfel strudel.
The cappuccino cost was unbelievable. 4.50 €, and when it arrived it was a huge disappointment. The cup was small and the cappuccino’s foam looked more like soap foam, had no creaminess.
The eggs had water at their bottom, like the ones you eat at cheap hotels.
And the strudel was the worst we ate in Vienna, cold and limp.
Do not know why people are going to this place, it’s too expensive for their poor and ill-​mannered service.

Ambiance: Beautiful setting with live pianist! Love love love, truly a gem in Vienna, the color scheme if red and gold makes it so classy!
Service: On point, no real language barrier here either, they do recommend pastries too which we are very happy that they did because man they were so good!

Beau café, ambiance années 20 – 30, très rétro. On a fait la queue, mais on rentre assez vite, et une fois installés sur les banquettes, on se dit que ça valait la peine.
Le Apfelstrudel était bon, ainsi que les cafés et la bière.
Un bon moment passé !

This is my favorite coffeehouse in Vienna. The best cakes and very good tea. In the evening they have life piano. The atmosphere is very nice. Very popular place for tourists to visit. But in the same time you will find locals there.

It’s just plain and simple, it is the classic traditional Viennese coffee house. Yes, it’s overpriced. Yes, it’s always crowded. Yes, the waiters are not the friendliest. BUT I think if you go in with these expectations, it is a great experience! That is just how Vienna is! It is absolutely GORGEOUS. Get the mélange and a pastry

Quand on pousse les portes de ce café, on entre au paradis! Un cadre classique magnifique, une pointe d’humour avec le mannequin à l’entrée et surtout, SURTOUT, des desserts à bons prix pour le cadre pourtant touristique. LE APFELSTRUDEL EST MON DESSERT PREFERE, voilà vous savez tout.

Le Café Central, c’est mon gros coup de cœur gourmand et sucré de Vienne. Il y a 15 bonnes minutes d’attente devant l’entrée en période touristique, et aux alentours du goûter, mais cela en vaut la peine.
Installé dans le palais Ferstel, le café offre un cadre sublime à ses clients. La hauteur sous plafond est vertigineuse, les lustres sont magnifiques, et les colonnades nombreuses tout autant que les arches qui façonnent le décor. Banquettes en cuir ou chaises de brasserie, cela dépendra de l’endroit où l’on vous placera.
Au centre du café se trouve la banque des pâtisseries, en arc de cercle, ainsi qu’un piano qui passé parfois sous les doigts d’un musicien. Les douceurs sucrées se succèdent sous nos yeux gourmands, et il n’est pas facile de faire son choix. Du coup, nous y sommes retournés deux fois !
Le Nuss Kuss à la noisette et la forêt noire sont passés sous ma fourchette à entremets; un délice où l’équilibre sucré /​chocolat était parfait. En boisson, je vous recommande de vous laisser tenter par le chocolat viennois qui est une petite merveille: une crème chantilly pas trop sucrée et une glacé vanille au milieu; peut-​on réellement faire plus gourmand ?
J’ai aussi goûté, dans l’assiette de l’amoureux, la traditionnelle apfelstrudel ainsi qu’un gâteau moitié génoise au chocolat, moitié génoise à l’orange, recouvert de chocolat au lait; deux autres pâtisseries que vous pouvez choisir les yeux fermés.
Côté prix, c’était tout à fait dans les normes: 4,50 € environ pour la part de gâteau.

So we stayed in a fantastic AirBnB right across the street from Café Central and my husband is a big fan… mostly because he has a history of visiting the place. I have mixed feelings about it. My initial recommendation is go for breakfast/brunch…not for dinner.
It is a very old restaurant. It opened in 1876 and was actually frequented by high end customers and well-​known historical figures like Leon Trotsky, Vladimir Lenin, Sigmund Freud and even Adolf Hitler. Until the late thirties, it was called the Chess School related to the number of chess players that frequented it. It closed after WWII and reopened in 1975.
Although it is popular with tourists, you see a decent number of locals there. I’d say more during the day than at night. Try the Viennese Coffee, it’s a little stronger than regular coffee and it’s local. Let’s not forget what Vienna is know for. It has two shots of espresso and is infused with whipped cream instead of milk.
The most important thing to do at Café Central is to have dessert… you can have the Sacher Torte, but I’d save that for a trip to the Hotel Sacher and try one of their many other desserts… and there are many. I was somewhat boring and had the cheesecake. I was not disappointed. It was lighter than the cheesecake you get in the states. I liked that.
We did have a dinner there with clients and I was relatively disappointed. They had a piano player there and it was nearly impossible to hear each other talk. It began to give me a headache quite honestly. The wiener schnitzel was dry and tasteless… I couldn’t finish it. Seemed like most of the food at the table was underwhelming.
So go during the day and have coffee and dessert. Visit for the history.

Touristen Vorsicht! Dieser Beitrag enstammt der Feder eines Einheimischen, der sich selbst gerne die Bezeichnung Alt-​Wiener-​Ur-​Viech gibt. Welches Verhältnis hat eine solche Person zum hiesigen Traditionskaffee?
Aus historischer Sicht strotzt es gerade nur so von Zeugnissen ehemaliger Zeitgenossen, wie Kaffeehausliteraten, Prominente, Politiker Künstler, oder sonstige Lebenskünstler, die schon damals der Auffassung gewesen sind, ohne arbeiten zu müssen kann man auch leben. Dann geht man eben ins Kaffeehaus. Um das dem Gast ein wenig näherzubringen wurde der gute Peter Altenberg in den Eingang gesetzt, wo er die noch lebenden Gäste mit seiner etwas grimmig bärtigen Visage wortlos begrüßt.
Leider kommt man an ihm nur über den werten Oberkellner vorbei zu einem Sitzplatz. Zu Spitzenzeiten bilden sich Warteschlangen bis auf die Straße und man muss schon als Einheimischer einen «Schuss» haben, sich das anzutun. Ich versuche es öfter ohne diese nette Servicehilfe, durfte dann aber auch wieder öfters aufstehen, weil ich, oh’ was für eine Unart, wieder einmal einen zu großen Tisch für mich alleine belegt hatte. Na weil z.B. ein anderer halt nicht mehr frei war, aber das ist dem Kellner «wurscht». Bitte mich nicht falsch verstehen, aber was ich damit sagen will ist, dass dieses Kaffeehausleben rein gar nichts mehr mit dem zu tun hat, was es einst war.
Rausschmeißen aus dem Kaffeehaus, so etwas passiert nur in einer Kultur, die dem Mammon mehr dient als dem Gast. Früher wurde hier Schach gespielt, ja hier entstanden Großmeister, es wurde Karten gespielt, es wurde diskutiert und man kannte sich untereinander. Der Kellner kannte seine Spezl’n und man begrüßte sich mit den Vornamen unter der Beifügung «Herr». Heute bis du hier lediglich Melkkuh der Touristenbranche.
Zweifellos, dass Innere ist sehenswert, Eine riesiger Raum mit an die 6 Meter hohe Säulen zieren das Ambiente dieses Prunkraumes im Palais Ferstl und Chinesen und Japaner können ihre Fotoapparate einfach nicht länger stillhalten. Ein Klavierspieler sorgt für Stimmung mit leichter Wiener Klassik, insgesamt ist es aber bedingt durch den Hall der sich bildete sehr laut hier.
Es gibt Kaffeespezialitäten und diverse Mehlspeisenklassiker, allesamt auf normalem Niveau, nicht besser, nicht schlechter als in den anderen Kaffees.
Essen, ja kann man auch. Es wird klassische Wiener Küche geboten, aber nochmals Vorsicht! Man schraube die Erwartungshaltung nicht allzu hoch. Viele einfache Wirtshäuser sind in der Kochkunst überlegen. Aber klar, du kannst dein Wiener Schnitzel oder den Tafelspitz in manierlich kleinen Portionsgrößen dafür zu überhöhten Preisen auch hier essen und es ist qualitativ ganz in Ordnung, aber nochmals: Mehr nicht.
Man wird sich fragen: Warum tust du dir das dann an? Na, weil ich deppert bin, genauso wie die vielen Touristen, die meinen man muss wenigstens einmal (im Leben oder pro Wienbesuch) hierherkommen. Aber nein, die san net deppert, im Gegensatz zu mir wissen sie’s ja nicht besser, nur, wenn ich wieder gegangen bin, bin ich zumeist wieder um eine weitere Illusion reicher geworden. Kaffeehaus, du bist heut leider nicht mehr dasselbe wie anno dazumal. Schod drum :-(
Hier wird ganz groß gepunktet mit dem absolut stilvollen Ambiente, und das auch bei mir. Aber, Hand aufs Herz, zähle einmal die Wiener hierorts. Klingelt’s jetzt ein wenig? Steht dein Counter nun auf «1», dann hast du offensichtlich mich, den Deppen, dort angetroffen, der es immer noch liebt, wenn er dann auch in seinen nostalgischen Träumen am Sitzplatz hinter seinem modernen Handy versumpert, Schach und Karten halt per iPad spielt, hin und wieder klatscht, wenn ihm die Musi g’fallen hat und solange bleibt wie er noch Kaffee im Schalerl hat, vorausgesetzt der Keller hat ihn dort auch so in Ruhe gelassen.
Ich stelle also für mich zweifelsfrei fest: ich lebe offensichtlich in der falschen Zeit. Darf ich hiermit mit einer Aussage, die (etwas umformuliert) von Alfred Polgar folgendermaßen stammt, diesen Beitrag schließen:
Es finden sich hier Gäste, die allein sein wollen, aber dazu Gesellschaft brauchen … oder: Es gibt Schaffende, denen nur im Central nichts einfällt, überall anderswo weit weniger. Trifft irgendwie auf mich zu :-)

This restaurant is very popular among the locals & tourists. We found out about this because of a voucher we received from a tour company for a free cake & coffee. Little did we know that there is a historical significance that makes this very interesting. While Hitler was still an art student in Vienna, Lanin & Strotsky were planning the revolution here against the Czar Nicholas of Russia. Other famous nobles were here too.
Anyways, the food is considered to be a bit pricey. But the desserts are just spectular. The moment you walk into the door, you’re facing this glass display of desserts. One forgets about the other items served on the menu. But that’s how they attract the tourists. The Sachertorte & Apple Strudel was about € 4 each. Soda is € 3.80. Other drinks are priced the same.
At lunchtime, my husband ordered the Wiener Schnitzel (breaded veal & fried) with potatoes for € 19.80 while I ordered the Tapfelpitz (boiled beef with julienned vegetables) & pricey at € 18.80. With 2 soda drinks, our bill was at € 47, 10% tip not included. That’s equivalent to a $ 50 meal in the US. I liked the Wiener Schnitzel better. The boiled beef had good flavor but the veggies were soggy & bland.
This place is always packed but they have a lot of seats. Service is typically slow. We did not get our food for 45 mins-​1 hr. But the waiters are very pleasant. It is customary to leave a 10% tip.
No reservations needed. Walk ins mostly. We went early for lunch and were seated right away.
If money is an issue, I would recommend going somewhere cheaper to eat. But come back for the desserts. It won’t disappoint.
The architecture inside is also something to behold. Around 5pm, a pianist graces your presence with some classical music while you indulge your senses with their food. I recommend coming here for the experience.

Noch Wienerischer geht kaum: Ein Muss für alle, die gehobenes Wiener Kaffeehausflair mit Innenstadt-​Sightseeing kombinieren wollen. Selbst wenn die Zeit nur für ein schnelles Meeting bei Mineral-​Zitrone reicht. Nur über die Preise sollte man sich nicht den Kopf zerbrechen.

Alright first of all, as the other reviews say, it is a café with nice décor. There is a lot of seating inside and a few tables outside. It gets crowded though due to popularity so you may have to wait. Lots of cakes are on display in the center of the hall so you can essentially choose your cake when you order.
We came in looking to just enjoy the atmosphere and maybe have some sweets. We told our waiter we wanted to share the torn pancake with plum sauce (8.90 euro) as that seemed popular with the other customers, and he asked «Is that it?» When we responded yes, that we wanted to share, he literally rolled his eyes at us, hmphed, and walked off.
Are you kidding me? Look at the picture below — that plate is huge, no one could eat that as a dessert for one. The both of us couldn’t even finish it though we were hungry to start. The plum sauce was really good, not too sweet and complimented the pancake well.

Das Highlight unserer Reise nach Wien. Hier stimmt alles. Das Ambiente ist einmalig die Kuchen ein Gedicht und der Service sehr freundlich und aufmerksam. Wir haben zu sechst sofort einen Platz gefunden und fühlten uns NICHT wie teilweise in anderen Touri-​Hotspots mehr geduldet als willkommen.

É um café bastante bonito e aconchegante. Um ótimo lugar para sentar por um tempo e aproveitar um cafezinho gostoso, afinal, Viena é famosa pelos cafés! Além dos vários tipos de cafés, eles também apresentam várias formas de sobremesas e de lanches.
Não posso julgar os lanches, já que não comi nenhum, mas as sobremesas são impecáveis! Com uma atenção especial ao bolo quente de chocolate com sorvete de baunilha e chantilly, uma sobremesa bastante famosa em Viena que foi inventada nesse Café! Vale muito a pena provar essa deliciosa sobremesa no local onde ela foi inventada.
Só não posso dar cinco estrelas porque o espaço é enorme e não tem garçons o suficiente pra atender o espaço, o que acarreta em uma certa demora no serviço, eles demoram até pra vim pegar o nosso pedido e para entregar a conta. Pra entregar a comida eles são bastante rápidos, pelo menos quando o assunto é sobremesa, porque ela já está pronta.
Caso você esteja procurando um local para sentar e aproveitar sem muita correria, este é seu lugar! Os preços são bastante convidativos e a atmosfera é bastante aconchegante e bem vienense.

The hundreds of reviews and fairly high star rating was enough to get myself, husband, and sister in here while we were waiting for our tour of the Spanish Riding School to begin. Ideally located near the Hofburg, Central Café is a great place for some coffee, tea, and a bite to eat.
The inside is really beautiful. It’s like what the Cheesecake Factory tries to be and fails miserably. The paint job is just really stunning. The true eye candy of Central Café is their pastry display case, and eye candy it is! Fun Fact: the deserts taste as good as they look! Not too sweet, and very flavorful.
Our server was professional and quick to serve us. After an intense day of walking and long night of drinking, we each took a pot of coffee and ordered a hearty breakfast of smoked salmon and toast (trust me, it was hearty enough). After staring at the desert case for so long, we finally agreed to split apple strudel and a strawberry shortcake like creation. The apple strudel has an essence of cognac to it and wasn’t as sweet as I expected, which I really enjoyed even though it wasn’t what I was expecting. The strawberry cake desert was really wonderful too, and again the flavor profile wasn’t what I was expecting.
While not a spot you want to go when starving, the quality of the food was great, the servers professional, and plenty of seating. A little on the expensive side, but you’re paying for the experience, I suppose. And an experience it was! It was a good stop before a big day in Vienna!

Très beau café, il faut prendre une table à l’intérieur pour profiter de son architecture et de son ambiance. Les étoiles manquantes sont pour la lenteur du service et les quelques erreurs de la serveuse.

Natürlich ist es ein sehr klassischen Kaffeehaus und die Räumlichkeiten an sich sehr schön. Es ist jedoch völlig überlaufen und man kommt sich zwischen den Touristen wie in einer Massenbedienungsanlage vor. Ausserdem ist es auch überteuert.

Cafehauskultur in Vollendung. Der Pianist spielt das ganze Repertoire rauf und runter. Das solltest du dir nicht entgehen lassen.

Café Central ist eine meiner beliebten Kaffee Häuser.
Schön und retro ausgeführt, es wirk sehr authentisch. Die Preise sind angemessen, die Bedienung immer sehr höflich. Am Abend wird manchmal live Klavier gespielt.
Die Torten sind top.

When in Vienna, one must visit a coffee shop.
And if one want to visit a hundred years old establishment? One must definitely come here. Definitely ignore the negative reviews.
I came here several times during my week in Vienna. Came here during freezing cold and somewhat snowy Vienna winter. I mean Jan/​Feb is still winter here?! European winters are such that a few blocks of walking can take all my energy. And I needed to get warm fast. This place was already on my list to visit because well… when in Vienna, one must visit a coffee shop.
This place was BEAUTIFUL!!! it is grand, marvelous, historic, majestic and completely packed. A little discouraging how busy they are with each visits because if you are like me, you walked past a ton of a cute little bars, coffee shops to get here. And most are quite empty. But then again, if you are really like me, you wouldn’t leave without eating here :)
Fast-​forward, I came in with a reservation just to bypass the crowd. I still had to wait a little to take my tinyself through the long angry lines of people sans reservations (whatever), but I was seated in less than five minutes. Yey!
Now what to get? For a starter, the first thing you see when you walk in is their giant case full of stunning Viennese pastries! So many beautiful pastries and cakes! So much colors! What to doooooo!
So I did what any normal food obsessed foodie would do. I started with
A glass of wine,
Cappuccino
Famous dumpling soup,
Schnitzel!
And ended with another cup of coffee with several cakes. Apple strudel being the house recommended specials and their raspberry torte because I love raspberries!
I spent a good two hours here listening to their piano man play everything from Mozarts to phantom of the opera. It was busy, buzzy, packed. I had a few waiters serve me my different orders but they were all tentative and friendly. As friendly as you can be for a 5 pm rush with lines out the door on a Sunday evening anyway. I never once felt rushed! Such a beautiful evening. The history of it all! Ahhhhh.
All the perfect elements I love in one place??? Yes please. It is and will always be my favorite spot in Vienna unless they start having robots servers and turn this into a discotecca with neons everything. Which I don’t see that happening anytime soon. Do you? :)

Das Café Central ist für mich DAS Kaffeehaus schlechthin. Das Ambiente ist einzigartig. Leider ist das Café Central komplett von Touristen überlaufen, so dass besonders am Nachmittag eine Warteschlange beim Einlass entsteht.
Das Café hat eine sehr gute Auswahl an Mehlspeisen und bietet Frühstück und Mittagsmenüs an. Die Speisekarte ist recht klein und bietet nur wenige Klassiker der Kaffeehausküche an. Aber mal ganz ehrlich, ins Café Central geht man wegen eines Kaffees und der Mehlspeisen. Die Kellner sind professionell und haben die leichte förmliche, aber freundliche Überheblichkeit, die einen klassischen Kaffeehausober ausmacht und die man an einem so traditionsreichen Ort erwarten kann.
Das Preisniveau liegt über dem Durchschnitt, aber noch deutlich unter dem des Café Landtmann.

Having seen this restaurant on many lists, and as it was within walking distance of the hotel… we decided to try it out, for a late evening treat.
The place is beautiful, and creates a great atmosphere for a nightcap. Unfortunately, we were not thrilled with the service. Took a while to get seated, after having to negotiate for a nice table… and then it took a while to get someone to take care of us… even then they seemed rushed.
meal was not very memorable… but the space is worth the visit.

This is a must see place for any visitor to Vienna. It’s a beautiful place with arched ceilings and very comfortable seating. When I came on a Saturday morning it wasn’t crowded and I found a seat easily. The service was friendly and quick.
I ordered the Vienna mélange, which is somewhat like a cappuccino, and an apple strudel.
The coffee was a little bit of a disappointment, but the strudel was excellent. I had a large size mélange, but to me it was a small portion. I’ve also had better quality coffee.
They didn’t seem to rush me at all, which was nice, so one could easily sit there and read a paper and enjoy the setting.
As a side note, they have excellent wifi for their guests, which is not something you find too often in Vienna.

Cakes, coffee, sweets? Don’t go to the French or even the swiss, the Austrians do it better!!! This place is a living proof!
After my first visit four years ago, I knew this time I had to go back! And so I did! We had to wait for about 5 minutes in line to get a table but it is worth it! The only downside is you have to wait outside and it’s kinda cold!
When you go in the staff is really friendly and professional, all of them speak perfect English. Don’t forget to take a look at the dessert case on your way in ;)
Get coffee and cake, the Viennese way! The maria Therese coffee is delicious and the apple strudel with vanilla sauce is a must! Also tried the café central torte which is a marzipan and chocolate, orange cake, not too sweet, not to heavy, just right!
When in Vienna you have to come here, it’s a must!

Très beau cadre pour ce café viennois.
Adresse a découvrir parmi tant d’autres mais surtout pour le décor et l’ambiance musicale de fin de m journée.
Les pâtisseries sont hélas tout a fait quelconques. Dommage, elles font également parti du patrimoine autrichien !
Raison pour mes 3 étoiles uniquement.

Tolle Atmosphäre, typisches Wiener Kaffeehaus, tolles Essen– geschmacklich 1A. Am Abend gibt es immer einen Pianisten, der das Publikum mit seinem Spiel verwöhnt. Im Winter unbedingt reservieren (oftmals gar nicht möglich), da es sonst extrem überfüllt ist und man mit einer Wartezeit rechnen muss. Bedienung ok.

Man hat mir gesagt, es ist ein Muss hierher zu kommen… und natürlich habe ich auf meine Wiener Unilocal-​Freunde gehört :)
Das Café (besser Kaffeehaus) ist im Historismus gebaut, viel Glanz, viel Stuck… die Wiener habens so halt gern — und mir gefällt es in diesem Umfeld auch :)
Ohne Reservierung kann es etwas dauern, bis man einen Platz bekommt… man wird gebeten, im Eingangsbereich zu warten, bis man platziert wird — bei größeren Gruppen kann die Wartezeit schon üppig werden!
Denn das Café Central ist nicht nur eine Wiener Institution mit vielen Stammgästen (auch Freud, Schnitzler und Trotzki waren früher regelmäßig hier), sondern natürlich auch ein Touristen-​Hotspot!
Dafür geht es hier aber sehr angenehm ruhig zu, auch wenn es immer voll ist — das liegt denke ich auch mal am Ambiente.
Im Eingangsbereich hinter dem Empfang sieht man die riesige Kuchentheke. Ich glaube es gibt hier jede Torte, die man sich vorstellen kann. Eine unglaubliche Auswahl!
Bei unserem Besuch hatten wir je eine Mélange und Marillen-​Palatschinken (wunderbar süss-​saure Note der Marillenmarmelade) und ein Schokoküchlein mit flüssiger Schokolade übergossen und hausgemachtem Vanilleeis. Beides war hervorragend. Geht meiner Meinung nach nicht besser!
Am Nachbartisch haben sich 2 Personen den sehr gut aussehenden Kaiserschmarrn geteilt. Und so wie es ausgesehen hat, haben sie ihn nicht geschafft. So eine große Portion bekommt man auch nicht überall.
Der Service war 1a, sehr flott und freundlich, die Preise zwar gehoben aber angemessen. Beim nächsten Wien-​Aufenthalt wieder ein Pflichtbesuch für mich!

Café typique de Vienne. Prévoir un peu d’attente avant d’être placé (beaucoup de monde). Comme dans tous les cafés de Vienne, on vient pour les boissons chaudes (cafés, chocolats) et les desserts et on n’est pas dessus ! La tenue des serveurs contribue au charme du lieu. Le bâtiment est magnifique de l’intérieur, vouté et très coloré. En fonction de votre placement vous aurez peut être la chance de déguster votre café à côté d’un grand tableau de Sissi. Un pianiste joue aussi par moment quelques morceaux. A faire absolument si vous êtes à Vienne.

Un des derniers vrais anciens cafés Viennois. Les serveurs y ressemblent toujours à des pingouins et vont ainsi bien avec le décor du lieu. Alors qu’avant c’était un point de rencontre de littéraires et de joueurs d’échec, aujourd’hui on y rencontre quasiment plus de Viennois mais prioritairement des touristes puisque le café est référencé dans tous les guides touristiques. Tout de même un endroit agréable au centre-​ville pour aller prendre un café et lire le journal tranquillement.
